Long story short, I need my harmonica disinfected. Like, outside and inside totally cleaned. How can I do it without damaging the reeds or any other part of it?

| | | | It's a Hohner Blues Band. So it was only like 5 bucks but I still don't wanna just toss it and buy another.

| | | | My grandpa's friend is a harmonicist and told me the best method (aside from taking it completely apart) is to put it in warm water with denture cleaner in it and let it soak for an hour, then pour hydrogen peroxide through it, then rinse that out with water and let it air dry. I just put it in the denture cleaner water.

The BB has a wooden comb and must NEVER be soaked in liquids.
The 'old guys' will tell you soak them in bourbon or beer - but that's an old wive's tale. That just swells the comb and when it dries back out, it will air leak badly if it doesn't just fall apart!
Take it apart and clean the individual parts - but do NOT bend the reeds or you will ruin them.
Use whatever disinfectant you like - I use alcohol - but you can use hydrogen peroxide and rinse with a slight bleach solution after and then lots of fresh water - but keep the comb out of those things.
Sunshine and fresh air will kill anything that might be in it - but if it is over 90 days since anyone played it - most bacterial viability is gone anyway. If not all of the little critters are dead. |

I'd just boil it in isopropyl alcohol. Then buy a new harp.

This harp is all metal and plastic and does NOT sell for $32 unless they're shipping it to you in Nigeria.

My bad - I saw Blues Band and jumped at it - I was thinking Blues Harp and that's where I went. That's what happens when I don't take my medications.
Sorry - boil one of those $1.98 harps all you want - they are even child-proof.
The Special 20 is a nice harp - a little hard to find in GC - but they bend well. I think one of the easier benders is the Blues Harp - but the Crossover is really the best bender I've found. I learned to bend the Big Rivers, and still have a bunch of them.
Once you can bend, you can pretty much bend any harp - even one of those GLHs from Hohner.
I've got a GLH from Germany - so you know how old that one is! The current model is Chinese. |
