DIY Electronic Drums with GHWT Kit

Sign in to disble this ad
I like to play drums as well as bass, but acoustic kits and electronic kits are both pretty expensive, and Im sure the rest of my household would prefer electronic. So Id really love to make my own electronic kit.

I know that electronic kits use piezos to recognize the vibrations and I also know that the same goes for drums in games like rock band and GHWT.

I have an M Audio interface, and Im curious. Is there any possible way to hook up my ghwt drums to the interface, and then run it some drum program and be able to record and play electronic drums?

That is possible, but I'd recommend getting something a bit more adjustable than the GHWT kit.

You could get one of the practice pad kits (multiple pads, on adjustable stands, to position closer to a real kit). Then you just put Piezos in, and run it to your interface and then through a program like...well I forgot their names right now, but they're out there.

Hi.

Since e-drum starter packs from the orient start from about 150€ new, half that used, I see little point in cheapo DIY. You'll spend at least 100€ for the parts and if You use a software based modelling, the latency will kill the rest of the fun.

The best way (one that I was going to try over a decade ago), is to gut a GM keyboard. There's plenty of drum sounds and if You mod the keys to be wired in pads of some sort, You'll be close enough.

Lots of work though, and only You can decide wether it's worth it or not.

Regards
Sam
