DIY/Homemade straps =D

Sign in to disble this ad
Lo everyone. I've been lurking around for a while, and I've heard a few times of people making their own straps. Anyone have any advice or guides or anything on how to do so, it'd be nice to know. I'm afraid of just doing it myself and having my bass fall off in the middle of playing. I've got no strap now and I'm a cheapass so if there are any family secret ninja techinques for making straps you guys would be willing to share with me, it'd be much appreciated.

Personally strap is not something i would ut corners on. Its whats keeping your bass from the floor.

This is true, but I'm sure there's a way to make it sturdy. I was thinking I'd get maybe like 3 layers of 3" wide denim or something? And then I've got some sheets of leather laying around that I could rivet onto them? Because all the straps I've ever seen are just a strip of nylon with leather nubbins sewn onto the end.

go to a junkyard and cut a few seatbelts and make them into a strap ...........i think that's cheap. If they safe lives they can save basses. Then you only need the quick lock strap buttons or however the're called.

didn't a bass player once make a strap out of a chain? maybe that was just a dream

a duct tape one would be pretty cool, so long as you made it thick enough

using a carbiners(sp?) is a really good idea actually, since the proper ones are designed to hold loads of weight and just will not break. the thing is proper ones are pretty expensive, and decorational ones arnt very strong

I was actually just thinking of using a belt and punching some holes in the other end for the other strap button

I'd simply recommend using Dunlop strap locks on a homemade strap.

I made one once out of the selvage from a replacement (vehicle) convertable top. That material is kind of like a strong vinyl or naugahyde, didn't slip or dig in, and was very comfortable on my shoulder. For the ends I doubled or tripled the thickness and glued/sewed it. I can't recall for sure, but I think I also put in a thin piece of plastic as a stiffener around the slot area. It wasn't pretty, but worked well and the price was definitely right. Of course, it was not adjustable.

I would think fabric store upholstery vinyl would work as well, esp if sewn into a long tube, common lengths are 42" and 48".

Those cheap carabiners don't need to hold a lot of weight, so they should suffice in this situation. Your imagination could run wild in the hardware department at your local Stuff Depot or Wally World.

I'm likin the carabiner and eyehook idea. The thing is, I don't want to risk screwing anything into the holes on my bass and cracking the wood or anything. Any suggestions for securing something into that hole safely without taking it to a luthier?

Yeah - unscrew the screw that is in there now and look at the size. Bring it with you to hardward store. Get something slightly bigger and a little longer.

A good drummer freind of mine is huge into chain mail. Huge as in, 2-3 full shirts, helmets, scale stuff, vests, countless bracelets, and finally a guitar strap.
