DJ Controller set up to mix Punk/Hardcore/Metal

Sign in to disble this ad
I plan to start mixing punk/hardcore/metal for a few shows we're organizing and house parties. I know it won't be a typically rhythmic thing to do, as a lot of the music I'll be using wasn't exactly on a click track, and that's why DJ's use digital music almost solely. It's just that the music between bands is sorely lacking locally, and I think the rest of us should have the advantage of some energetic presence while bands are setting up...

I'd like to spend under $200 for the controller. It's the only component I don't have. I'll be running that through a macbook pro, and then out with an Apogee Duet.

Does anyone have any experience as a DJ? With DJ controllers? With trying to mix something that's not Carl Cox???

Check out the Hercules DJ Console Mk4:

The Hercules Steel and RMX are highly recommended, but this one is $200.

That's all I know about controllers. I'm a turntable/vinyl guy myself.

Thanks! I'm planning on mixing some hard to find on vinyl music, like Refused - shape pf punk to come and Deloused... i can't spend $100 on just those two records

For interested parties:
...in my research I've found that the absolute cutting edge seems to be this:

Wish I'd found that two years ago when I had money to spend.

The lowest end controllers lack outputs, and that means you can't preview the mix on your headphones. Apparently there's a cheap external soundcard fix for this, but I'm not interested in figuring that out. So for around $200-$300 you can score a decent set-up. Personally I think I'll wait until some of my equipment moves and hopefully pickup that stanton setup.

Any information on monitoring the mix with headphones? Some controllers don't facilitate that functionality. I've read that a behringer external souncard can do it. Does anyone know if the appogee duet can? I have one, and was planning to use it for my output.
