Do coins wreck strings

i made this really cool bass intro effect using a aus 20c coin and putting it in between e and d strings up the top then sliding it down the fret board. i told my friend a guitarist and he said that coins wreck strings is this true

Metal will damage metal quicker than plastic will damage metal... However... it won't destroy them for a while. Bass strings really can take a beating.

so if i don't do this regularly it should be fine, the technique doesn't need practicing so it fine thx
