Do Fender's Vintage Stratocasters use nitro finish?

Sign in to disble this ad
Greetings!!

Since its a non-bass related question, I'll post it on this section.

My guitar player has this 80's (or 70's, I'm not shure, heheheh) Vintage Stratocaster, and yesterday we where discussing if it has nitro finish, because it shows the same type of wear that my Nitro-finish-Tbird has, but we don't know when did Fender start using this.

If it helps, its a sunburst one, and whatever finish it has, its quite thin.

Cheers!

If it's a standard issue 70's-80's Strat, it's going to be a polyester finish. If it's from the vintage spec reissue series from the early 80's, then it will be nitro. Fender used nitro on all of it's instruments prior to the switch to poly only, by the end of 1968.

Let me correct my previous post as I commented as a lay person, about Fender finishes from memory, and I was close, but a bit off in my memory. Fender went to a poly finish for the body undercoat and the necks in 68, but the top finish coat of the body and the face of the head stock were nitro. The ' thick skin ' all polyester finish didn't appear until 1970. Even then the head stock facings got nitro for the non color painted head stocks.
