from all of the treads i've read and participated in, there seems to be a lot of animosity between people.

am i just seeing the worst in people or does anyone else notice this?

Some of us have problems, some have bad attitudes. Some like to vent, some like to give helpful information. Some like to throw shooting stars at each other, some like to crack some jokes.

Blame the internet and bad parenting.

If you earn your blood stripes, you can join in on the fun and jackassery.

but why? it seems to me that ripping on another musician is doing nothing but discouraging them. isn't the whole point of this site to bring fellow bass players together?

If you've heard of Yngwie 4string, I think you might understand why we have a system of earning blood-stripes around here.

Your right about the general lack of respect, but it isn't exclusive to TB. I see alot of snide, rude and otherwise comments on here, but no more than in day to day life outside of TB.

It isn't just MY theory, but sometimes people feel the need to insult others to feel better about themselves and it is a sad, sad thing. In a way, I feel sorry for them--even though they treat others with so much negativity. Sometimes I participate in the threads, sometimes I ignore them. Neither really accomplishes anything.

TalkBass seems like one of the nicest communities to me. I've never been treated with disrespect. I'm waiting for another Michigan get together to come around.

I find you dont act like an idiot your are not treated as one.

I think everyone has strong opinions that not always agree with everyone which leads to heated "conversations". I think all people are like that. Not everyone is going to agree. Part of that is what makes this place interesting, shocking and funny.

What is more of an issue of offense is people making ignorant comments or opinions without out validating them. Also some here have a real insensitivity and a failure to look at things from someone else's view point.

On the other hand you will get people's honest opinions and sometimes it can sound harsh or just plain wrong. It not an arse kissing site.

When you get so many people from so many different ages, races & beliefs, there is bound to be some clashing. It goes with the territory.

The trouble with communication like this is that there is no "tone of voice" - with regulars who have been here a while you can get a sense of this and often what you are seeing is good-natured 'teasing' and joking.

To a newcomer it may look differently to the way that the people involved, intended it...?

Well this is the other thing - people who blunder in regardless are going to be resented!

Why not do a bit of reading, search a few threads, research etc. - before diving in,opening your mouth and putting your foot in it!

What annoys regulars is to see the same simple questions asked over and over - which have been answered many times and looking at existing, similar threads would have provided the answer - maybe even a Google search!!

Act like a noob - get treated like one!
Act like and idiot - get the "respect" you deserve!

Do a bit of work yourself and people will be more inclined to help you and treat you nicely!

Ah, most of it's all in good fun. I find if I'm not in one of the technical forums that actually requires working brain cells to participate in, 95% of what I say is absolute bull****, no harm meant anywhere. That's true for most everyone else here, methinks, with the exception of a couple people frequenting a couple choice topics...

I could be totally wrong about that though.

It is like this on other fourms also. IMO it is due to two things. The first has already been mentioned the lack tonal, facial, body expression. The second is when you don't have to face some one to tell them somthing you lose a bit of reserve/self control so it i easier to be rude or short.

While it is like this on other forums, IME, TB is the most timid forum in that respect

My thoughts!

We're only mean and rude to the stupids of the world.
