Hope this doesn't derail into a religion discussion of any type. . .
I was wondering if christian or religious, or gospel/church bands have less drama than other "regular" bands. . .
I mean, I would think that with the positive message and special motivation these bands are based on, everybody should get along and respect each other more, and everything should run more smoothly - because you are really doing it for a higher power, not your mere mortal satisfaction.
I see so much drama in typical bands: money, unprofessionalism, drugs, alcohol, selfishness, etc.
I wonder if, in general, religion-oriented bands get along better.
(FYI, I have never played in such bands, although I did a church gig recently. . .)

I played in our church band for 12 years. Most talented band I've ever been in. When I first started playing with them, the guitar player told me 'this is just like every other band you've ever been in'. He was right. Drama, ego and politics were common.
Regardless, they're all dear friends and I still play with them a couple of weekends a month. I just don't expect anything different than a regular band.

So to answer your question, religious bands do not have less drama, they're just as screwed up as every other band.

| | Yeah, I've got the moves like Jagger. | | Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: G.R. MI | | | My drummer used to play in such a band. They toured nationally for a few years. They weren't overtly Christian, but they all attended the same church and regularly communicated with the congregation and their pastor from the road.
They broke up years ago, and he hasn't talked to either the guitar player or the bassist since.
So, musicians are pretty much all egotistical asses. No matter where you go, there you are.

Just because you're playing for a higher power doesn't mean that you're immune to eating brains for breakfast. |

In a choir setting I think it is worst because you have more people and more outside influences. In my situation we have 30 members in the choir and generally have 20 +/- show up at any given event. In addition to the other members we have the music director, litergy director and a few other non-members sticking their $0.02 in just for giggles. There was much less in the 4 piece rock cover or 3 piece punk orginal bands I played in.

Sooooo sig worthy.
To answer the OP. Yes, yes we/they do. Why? Because we are all still imperfect humans. |

The band Zao has no original members left and has probably gone through close to 20 different people all leaving because of conflicts. So to answer your question, no, they do not have less drama. My church band has no drama, but that is because we put God first and everything else just seems to work.

My own band that plays every Sunday gets that kind of stuff from time to time, but we talk things over and pray. Sounds silly to people who don't do it, but prayer works for us. |

I've played in several religious groups (worship groups, singer songwriter types, "contemporary" bands), and they've all been filled with the same amount of bang-my-head-against-the-wall nonsense that I have gotten in my secular groups. |

I was the singer and bass player and man I got hounded by local church members and fans about "living the life". I played music, I wasn't trying to witness to anyone with my music. I thought of it as clean entertainment for a Chistian audience with Christian themes. I was hounded for not preaching.
This was right before a I "wised up" about religion. |

one good thing is that I get encouragement when I make a mistake (often) and not "What did you do Beaver!?"

The only drama for me comes when there is a change within the leadership of the church... there is much less drama than there is in any other band I have played in... | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
