Do Those Close To You Hate Music You Like?

I was just jammin' with GFR's Live Album, more specifically, In Need, when my wife and daughter came home. They began yelling (so I would hear them) TURN IT OFF!! When I did, they proceeded to tell me how "awful" it is and how much they "hate it!" Not so much because of the volume, but the overall sound of it all.

I knew they didn't dig everything I do, but man... Such unappreciation is disappointing from those I'll be around for many years to come.

Don't mind me. I'm just sorrowfully venting. GFR is still one of my favorites.

The only people that like the same music I do are my friends. My girlfriend and her friends and my family are kind of repulsed by most of it (hardcore punk and fast ska) but they do dig some chilli peppers though...

I'm into noise, so the only people I know who like what I do are other noise artists. I feel your pain brother

My wife hates the music I like. Im try to get my kids into Rush, but they are young (2 and 6) and my son thinks when I say Rush that its Big Time Rush. I give him the stinkeye.

I assume GFR is still Grand Funk Railroad? Ya never know these days as I'm still getting used to Pearl Jam and Nirvana being called classic rock or oldies.

Hold on, them damn kids are on my lawn again.

Now where was I? So what kind of music do your wife and daughter like?

My dad saw a video of Will Lee and asked me why the hell the weird guy wearing obnoxious glasses was jumping while playing music.

Yes, one word HEADPHONES.

Fortunately, the wife and I love a lot of the same music, and moods for both of us vary (i.e. sometimes it's Rush, sometimes it's Miles Davis, and other times it's Paul Young). My son, who is mostly into newer stuff, actually asked me to burn him copies of Slayer-"Reign In Blood", Kiss-"Destroyer", and Death-"Individual Thought Patterns" for his room. And I did take him to see Rush twice, and he had a blast both times.

None of those probs in my house, my wife grew up on hair metal and still loves, my son loves all things rock, yet my daughter loves Bieber (oh well, I tried!). I am fortunate that my 15 y/o son (A) has picked up the bass and is following in my footsteps (B) he knows as much about 70's-80's rock as anyone who actually grew up in that period - almost a walking encyclopedia. I'm very proud of my son to say the least

All my friends/parents hate sublime, primus, rancid (every single person always makes a comment on how bad the singer is), eminem, sonic youth, rush, yes, black keys, and most rhcp and greenday (they all love the insanely cliche songs).

Maybe I have bad taste in music?

My wife hates everything I am into musically.
Makes for some real excitement when I tell her that I'm going to see RUSH....again.
(For the 42nd time since 1981)

Yep, Unfortunately most are into (K)rap and electro pop, not most of my decent music,

Melodic Death Metal.

I can't even imagine what it would feel like to not like GFR.

My girlfriend doesn't mind my stuff, but I can't stand hers. I control the iPod in my car when I drive, and the cd player in her car is broken. It's a pretty good arrangement.

I have the opposite problem: I hate the music that everyone else likes.

I DO NOT WANT country music, jawaiian reggae or Josh Grobin to occur anywhere near my being.

Isn't that an oxymoron?

I can't seem to 'hate' any music. At all. The only type I just can't listen to seems to be screamo, and I only dislike it. Hate it? No, not at all. Even then, I can get into the music of it and when the other actual singer is singing between the lead screamer's lines.

Yep.

So what kind of music do your wife and daughter like?
My daughter digs that Disney stuff. No, I can't stand listening to that stuff. In my defense though... That's different. I'm supposed to be that way. After all, I am a father 42 years older than she. (Actually, I do make sure not to voice that--For whatever that's worth).

My wife and I do like some of the same stuff--Keltic, acoustic works from around the world, some jazz crosses over, I enjoy a good amount of classical piano and She doesn't mind some of the more tame bluegrass. I knew she wasn't very fond of some of what I play; I just didn't expect such strength in that negativity.
