Do you care about resale value?

I was just wondering how many people took into account resale value when buying gear?

I don't have a mountain of gear and don't have much money at the mo (I'm 17 in college and pocket money is still my only source of cash) so I tend to put a lot of thought and research into what gear to buy.

I've never thought about resale value though. In fact the only item I've sold was my 2nd guitar amp, to raise funds for my Trace Elliot

When I think about selling most of my gear, I couldn't even consider it, I love it all too much! I suppose it could be that most if my stuff is a 'first', 'first guitar', 'first good bass', 'first bass amp' etc.

Is there anyone else on TB who would never sell any of their gear?

Matt

Not until I can buy something outright first.

One bass, one guitar, two pedals, one amp. Running a pretty skim crew already.

But yes, should I have money to buy new gear then yes, I won't buy garbage; I'll buy used as to not lose half its value while I drive it off the lot.

I've started buying stuff secondhand, but that has less to do with resale value than "this is how much money I have, I can either get a new practice amp or a second hand head and cab.. hmmm..."

I don't care.
But some items just hold there value better.
I've owned two Padulla basses.
They were great but lost maybe 40%-50% in resale.
On the other hand, the MTD and Fender basses I let go held there own or went up in value.
For me Resale value does not make a great bass.
A great bass is just a great bass.

I care about enjoyment value - if I spend 10k on a bass I gotta have 10k of fun & it doesn't owe me anything beyond that...

Nope, partly because since i got my warmoth, i am now of the frame of mind, 5 bass limit, My Ep Thunderbird, Fender P, Warmoth 5 String, and the two that will be coming, definately one more Warmoth, 4 string this time, and possibly some form of active, or rickenbacker , or a warmoth routed for rickenbacker pickups, likely with a iceman shape.

Due to the fact that the Epi was my first, and a good bass despite a flaw or two , that i can easily fix, the Fender was from my parents, first and last they would buy me, and i love it, the Warmoth is a tribute to my dad who passed away, and after that the 4th will be special, and the 5th is just a nice number to get to, and i can imagine a fifth id want.

Far as amps, Sticking with Ashdown for now, and untill i need more than my 307watt combo, thats all im using. , and keeping pedals in working order.

I strongly care about resale value, it's what allows me to have 7 basses and 6 guitars as well as a whole bunch of amps and cabs. Properly purchased and cared for, when I do sell something theres always a nice profit on top and thats what makes this hobby affordable to me.

I usually buy used, so resale value isn't generally an issue. On the occasion when I'm buying a new product, resale value is rarely a factor in my decision.

I'm in the same boat. I actually just got a backup bass (I was running on one for 4-5 months.... kinda making me nervous).

I am always looking at resale value. It's a habit of being in the business. I'm also not super attached to any of my gear (except for my Cirrus... I'm pretty sure they will have to bury me with that). I am constantly looking at my stuff and thinking, "If worse came to worse, what can I get for everything".

It's strange. I usually don't buy brands known to have low resale value, but I don't think about resale value when I buy gear (other than avoiding said brands). I always intend on keeping whatever it is.

I mostly own Fender, Mesa and Ampeg, so I'd have to say yes.

I don't always care, but I've come to care more than I once did. This is probably the result of buying instruments I thought were keepers, then selling or trading them. I try not to get too badly burnt, and sometimes make money.

Personally, I don't care about resale value because when times are tough it can be easy to sell something when you're desperate (holy s#$t I miss those '66 and '68 P basses). I go the Warmoth route these days because I know what i want more than I used to and they aren't worth anything except to me.

When I bought my Fender P used for a fairly low cost, I knew that if I ever had to sell it, I'd get roughly the same amount back that I paid for it. But I'm in the process of piecing together a new rig and I couldn't care less, because if this rig is everything I hope it will be, I'll never want to sell it. And if I do, screw it, I'll still get something back for it.

Never think about it when I'm buying new or used. I just buy what sounds and feels good!
