This has been an ongoing thing with me for some time now. Years actually. I will sit and watch the news or surf the net all the while looking at my bass on its stand and not play for days. Then I will just sit and play for hours. I have so many unfinished songs that I have written, but just don't have the Umph, to play.
Ever happen to you?

I am hoping the possibility of a new Ric will get me in the mood again.

I rarely practice on my own anymore and get little satisfaction from playing on my own!
The thing that i still enjoy is performing! I love being on a stage and i love seeing that what im playing is making everybody go mental!
Just thought i would add that i have been a bass player for 9 years, doing it full time for the past 4 years...
Regarding the hobby i think it is very true!
When bass playing started to be my job rather than my hobby i ended up in situations where i really didnt want to play but had to!
It does make it hard becasue the thing you used to love doing becomes something that you sometimes have to do even if you dont feel like it!
I just started getting a lot into MMA training and Photography, and having hobbies that are in no way related to music is something i should have done years ago!

I don't know why, but I still enjoy playing music after 40 years. Some of my focus has shifted as to what instruments that I play.
I've been a drummer forever, I fooled around with bass on and off since the early seventies. I still play drum kit, but I find that virtually all of my current gigs are performing as a hand percussionist. In the past six months I've gotten much more serious about the bass and I'm now taking lessons.

And yes. I'm coming off a year hiatus from not gigging and a three year hiatus of never practicing. Music has finally become interesting again. |

I know I'll get my mojo back and I am searching for a band right now to make it more fun than just jamming at home.
I took a couple of my basses apart to fit them in my car to move them to Utah and 2+ weeks later I still haven't strung them up...Kinda sad.

Usually, right after the tired phase, I find myself in a good mood for learning something new (technique, or brush up on my theoretical knowledge).

I started off on guitar, then gravitated to drums through high school jazz band and now a 23+ year run on bass guitar. I will never completely scratch that music-creating itch, but whenever I *bore* of making noise on one instrument, I shift. I have all of the above and more in my little den... I do this not out of any other need than to keep it interesting and to learn and appreciate the interplay. Also out of necessity as my humble little studio is not very big, and with the exception of times my musical friends come over and collaborate, I often find myself wanting to flesh out ideas that pop into my head at innoportune moments (my cell is filled with tidbits of me humming ideas into it while at work.) quick working-throughs when i get home are a must, I hate to forget ideas. In a decade or so, one of them may be a hit (for someone else, hahaha)
I couple all that with taking comfort in the fact that there will always be something new to learn and appreciate on ANY instrument, so I strive for that a lot more too.

| | Yeah, I've got the moves like Jagger. | | Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: G.R. MI | | | I was going to reply "yes", but it's not the playing music part that gives me a strong urge to kill with growing regularity.
Playing music is a gas. Being part of a working band, and dealing with band politics often makes me want to throw up my hands and quit.

| | | | do I ever get tired of playing music? no. What I DO get tired of is asking hundreds of people that I know if they can go see a show I'm playing, hear 20 of them say yes, and then play to a bar full of about six people - two people from the band before us, two people being bartenders, and the last two being the guitarist's parents. But as for playing music, no, I never get tired of that.

| | | | /\ sorry for the whine post, I really do enjoy playing music, but sometimes it spoils the fun when nobody wants to hear it.
