Do you ever need a reality check?

Yesterday I was playing 6 string guitar. I'm going through a real blues phase right now. I'm doing my normal "should I stay or should I go" routine regarding whether I should do the "Marshally" thing or the clean "Fender" thing, amp wise. Same with the guitars - I'm trying to make a Les Paul work over the Strat. I finally just asked my son and his friend to tell me what they thought of the "sound" of the Les Paul (straight into a Marshall half stack). They said it sounded "muffly". I thought that, but I needed a reality check from somebody like these 2 kids who knew nothing except what they heard. I plugged the Strat in, hit a few chords, and asked them. They said "much better - yea that's it" kind of thing. To me it's so valuable to get honest, raw opinion like this from people who know nothing except what their ears hear.
