Do you read music trade magazines for inspiration?

Sometimes I pick up a magazine, like Magnet, to see if I can get any inspiration. I usually put it down thinking, "God, won't anything please these guys?"

It's like they take pride in the fact that no band will ever be as good as The (insert obscure underground band) and all the new stuff coming out basically sucks.

Why do I do this to myself? It's not inspirational. It just makes me want to curl up into a ball and never play bass again. I don't want to end up making music to please these magazines, and yet I can't help wanting to please them.

Does any of this make sense?

Don't you know it's really cool to be bored and unimpressed by anyone that's not in some imaginary cool clique? A whole magazine full of those people... Boy, never seen that before I think Ben Folds did a really nice job with this:

Quote:
battle of who could care less :: ben folds five

Do you not hear me anymore?
I know it's not your thing to care.
I know it's cool to be so bored
But it sucks me in,
It sucks, it works.
I guess it's cool to be alone.

Will you never rest
Fighting the battle of who could care less?
Everyday you wake up late.
Sometimes I wish I was
That way.

And you think Rockford Files is cool,
But there are some things
That you would change if it were up to you.
So think about your masterpiece.
Watch some Rockford Files,
And call to see if Paul can score some weed.

Do you never rest
Fighting the battle of who could care less?
Unearned unhappiness,
That's alright, I guess.

I've got this great idea.
Why don't we pitch it to the Franklin Effin' Mint?
Fine pewter portraits of General Apathy
And Major Boredom singing
"Whatever and ever, amen."

Oh well, maybe not, try again.
This should cheer you up for sure.
See, I've got your old I.D.,
And you're all dressed up like The Cure.

You never rest
Fighting the battle of who could care less?
Unearned unhappiness,
You're my hero, I confess.
