Well, surely there would be SOME reason they picked up the bass (over the guitar or any other instrument) so there will always be an influence, maybe not always a musical influence. I started playing bass cuz everyone else played guitar.

I picked up saxophone without really ever hearing one solo`d just because my brother did it before me and I wanted to be involved with a school program outside of soccer and honors society. But even then you can say my brother influenced me so I dunno. It`d be tricky to think of a situation where someone isn`t influenced at all.

I learned the violin with no influence.
I thought it looked cool to play it.

The only way you're going to pick up an instrument without any influences is if you live on Alpha Centauri! Otherwise there will always be influences, even if it's only your mother singing lullabies to you when you're a baby.

I'm under the influence lots of times when I'm playing. Especially on the last set.

sure.....I did.

One thing though- there are "inspirations" and there are "influences".

I've been inspired by far more than I've been influenced.

I think if you've listened to music at all, you've been influenced. The difference is whether or not you have any specific influences.
