ive think about investing in a piano and a guitar for fun and composing. But at the same time I feel i should get some nice ampeg and accustic bass firts.

are you in the same dilemma? Do you own other instrument to compose music?

I always write songs on the guitar.

Both. I hear the song in my head, and I use whatever tools I need to express what I hear, to communicate.

MadMan...Which model might you consider a "good" keyboard. I've struggling with the best way to get my music ideas down too. Does anyone have a brand and model in mind?

Guitar, Bass or Guitar Pro. I have written riffs on the piano but it's a rarity because I don't really play.

Piano, but I've been playing piano for 12 years now. Maybe more.

A word of advice, if you know NOTHING of playing the piano, DONT get one unless you'll take lessons. Just a waste of your money. I'm speaking out of experience here, it's NOT as easy as it looks.

Guitar. Can't play even the simplest chord changes in time on piano. I'd like to learn better but I don't have enough inspiration or dedication to succeed with that.

Bass. Can hammer out basic stuff on keys and guitar, but prefer to compose on bass.

I used to compose exclusively on bass, and did so for 3 years, but eventually found its sonic qualities to be undesirable for really composing with. I've since switched to keys/piano, and have found I am immensely better at communicating my musical ideas now.

I use piano (actually a Yamaha keyboard), guitar, and bass to put my ideas down. I only consider myself proficient in bass though. However, when coming up with ideas I use my voice the most and sing out stuff. A lot of my music ideas come when I don't have an instrument handy. Usually when this happens I call my cellphone to record it using Braincast or some sort of internet messaging service. Then I can transcribe it from the recording when I get home.

I agree that one should get lessons for all instruments that they're learning, but I disagree that a piano is going to gather up dust if you don't. Figuring out stuff by ear seems a lot easier on piano even though I can barely play chords. I think that once someone figures out how the notes on a piano are laid out and how to form basic chords they can do a lot with a piano.
