Does anyone else hear phantom music?

Maybe I party a little too much during band practice, or maybe I stand too close to my amp, but I keep having this wierd thing happen to me when we're jamming.
I hear bass lines that I'm not playing and I don't think it's the keyboardist. I also hear singing when noones near a mic. God knows if I'm hearing guitarists that are'nt playing. OR drum beats that aren't being palyed.
I've always been one of those people that has songs running through my head be them written by someone else or one I've made up but these bass lines during practice are really strange.
Does anyone else experience this sort of thing?

Hear them how?

Like how a song gets stuck in your head. You can still hear it, but you know its not being played physicaly.

Or do they actually sound like they are comming from somthing nearby?

yes! this happens to me too!!

it's things like I keep thinking there's a wah-wah effect on my bass when there isn't... or I think we've got synth strings going even though we don't have a keyboarded.

it actually sounds like the sound is there, like it really is happening, but when you realise that it isn't, it goes away until you stop concentrating on ignoring it.

My guitarist played VERY melodic guitar chords in songs I would swear behind his guitar parts I could here a chorus of voices in harmony with part when he would kick in the overdrive.

No! It exists, it's called musical hallucination and very well described in Oliver Sacks' Musicofilia.

It is probably overtones popping out that aren't actually being played. When certain frequencies are being played together certain overtones can "pop" out and become quite noticable (distortions and fuzz accentuate this a lot). Check out Glenn Branca's work, he used electric guitars and produced sounds that sounded like trumpets, oboes and other instruments. Heady stuff!!!!

Tibetan throat singers use the same ideas.......

AWESOME BOOK. I just finished reading this last night.

http://www.oliversacks.com/musicophilia.htm

Sacks describes how, in certain individuals, often musicians who are exposed to large amounts of music, normal brain and auditory sensor function can "misfire" and cause the subjects to actually perceive real sounds and music, even when no sounds are present. Quite a few other odd musical behaviors and experiences are described in detail, as well. Everyone who's passionate about music should read this book!

He's also the author of The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat.

Yeah I get that happening to me too, when there is a bass fill I don't know I hear it in my head, I also hear singing when we play a song without a singer.

Cool I thought I was going crazy. Well I probably am but at least its not a lonely trip.
I'm readinga fiction book right now and was going to reread the Lord of the rings series next but maybe I will try Musicophilia instead.
Now does anyone have an answer for the little creatures hiding under my bed....Just kidding
