Does anyone have the guts to admit that music has slid down the crapper

I mean come on. What happen to the poor black guys writing blues. I don't know much about blues or jazz. I enjoy it, but I love rock n roll and true rock n roll comes from england. I'm american. led zepplin, floyd, the stones, the beatles, all that stuff comes from england. And nowadays oasis, the verve, doves are carrying that on. Not blur, blur is pop ****. But the stone roses and teh smiths they carried that on, but now maroon 5 and god help me nickleback and all that ****. Ah it makes me sick. Bands like alice in chains and nirvana were good, but jesus christ nobody has the balls to write rock n roll anymore and it makes me sick. I mean. Nobody says anything about it either. I know for a fact there will be some dumb ****in bubblegum dick whos going to complain that I'm wrong and they get pissed cause I'm right. You never see guys going on MTV all coked up or drunk and having the balls to say, "This is absolute ****" Nobody does that anymore. Nobody says to the media this band is **** or this band is **** and this is good. Noel Gallagher does, but its time for somebody else to carry the torch.

I hear your argument and agree for the most part. The state of rock and roll in America is dire indeed. But for every rule there is an exception....

Check out Foo Fighters on their current tour. Or Aerosmith for that matter. There are still some GREAT American rock and roll bands. Its just a shame that the great ones are being eclipsed by "People Magazine" bands like Fall out Boy and Good Charlotte.

I agree man foo fighters are good. I think dave grohl is a cool guy. Aerosmith as well has some good tunes. I mean when they did that movie soundtrack I thought that was goofy, but they have some good tunes. The music industry is just so poppy and ******** and fake and the guys dont write there own music and its all mass media its like ****en being cranked out of some businessmans ass. It sucks. And people know that in the back of their minds, but they don't have the guts or the heart to say it. so they can waste away watching dancing with the stars.

Couple of Thoughts

1. Black guys writing blues never sold as many records as the Stones, Beatles singing their songs.

2. The mass market during that era was controlled by the radio and was manipulated (ever hear of 'payolla') to make and break stars. The current era is somewhere between record companies and a truly free market on the internet (although certain some would argue the internet is for thieves but these are the same guys who sold the same music on three different media: vinyl; mylar; and CD).

3. There were many more live music venues just 10 years ago, which inflated and integrated the musician populations. Back in the day when you weren't working a club gig (6 nights a week, 5 sets a night) you were out jamming, sitting in or otherwise hanging out with other musicians. There was a larger sense of community and development which is now carried on bits and bytes (like TB).

4. Bubble gum shite was the stuff of British music. You've named some of the better acts out of England but check out Herman and the Hermits for some real brit c**p.

5. Music has diversified from the single mass market into many smaller markets including Rap (choke), and modern country is what a decade ago would be called pop. Times, they are a changing.

6. Finally, Nirvana was a seminal band, at a particular time and in my music history, and represented a moment where musicians sought to empower themselves, unfortunately leading to Linkin Park and others who began selling T-Shirts, etc.

Just my opinion

Wow, I couldn't disagree more. All I see here so far is discussion of pop music, which is just that... pop. It has little to do with the "state of music" IMO. You have to search harder now for good stuff, but with the digital revolution, cheap high-quality recording gear, and the net there's more awesome stuff available now then ever before. Just because it ain't on MTV or Top 40 radio doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

I think the biggest problem is how horrible most rock recordings sound these days. The music is good, but one cannot respond to it because the sound is so bad. You'd think Dave Grohl could afford to make a good sounding record - and he likely spent that kind of money - but the FF albums are unlistenable IMHO - and I like the tunes when local bands play them live. A lot of the locally produced stuff I hear sounds a lot better than most of the big-time bands' albums.

There is a thread like this once every couple of months, people are pretty willing to admit it. People have been admitting that music has been going down the crapper since Scott Joplin had the balls to introduce those "jungle rhythms" (syncopation) to young people. I will just say what I say in every one of these threads:

TURN OFF YOUR RADIO!

It's as simple as that, then you don't have to worry about all the garbage people are listening to. And, nobody is making rock worth listening to anymore? Ha, you aren't looking at all. And if Noel Gallagher is the one carrying the rock torch, I don't want to be involved with rock... whatever that is. With myspace and youtube, the world of music is overflooded, most of it's garbage. But if I wanted to discover a new band that I would really like, I could spend 5 minutes looking and find something great. You aren't going to find whatever you like on the radio, obviously, but with a tiny bit of effort you could find tons of bands that rip off the Beatles.

Sorry, Oasis has a couple OK songs, but the fact that they think they are so amazing... bigger than the Beatles... etc. The Beatles did something new, they were the first band to sound like the Beatles. They didn't rip off someone's style and then claim to be bigger than them.

I wish I could find the quote that said (paraphrasing), we use to say we were the best band in the world, now we still think we are, but we just don't say it.

"Nobody saying anything about it"

Not me comrade. I'm mad as heck!!! Time we all hit the streets and let our voices be heard over this travesty!

I'll bring the Molotov cocktails and ski masks...you bring the baseball bats and flaming bags full of dog poop. We'll meet down at RCA Records and show these fascists just who they're fooling with.

meh

Calm down, you are freaking out. You are just exposed to way too much hype about the music industries' current cash cows. Its like when people watch way too much news and then they start to think that they are going to get mugged and raped in their driveway.

Just dig a little deeper into some of the newer bands out there, your bound to find one or two that you can click with.

There is plenty of good stuff out there... you just gotta go a little off the beaten track to find it. The commercial radio stations are NOT the place to find it.

As Ralph Nader said (I hope I got this right, sorry if I haven't): "99% of anything is crap"... and that goes for music, of any genre.

Yeah, when people start complaining about the music on MTV and the radio it sounds to me like someone complaining about the quality of food at McDonalds.

Music seems fine to me. Even on the radio, something good is just a spin of the dial away.

Sorry, disagree. True rock n roll came from Saint Louis, courtesy of Chuck Berry. Everything that came later may or may not have been an improvement, but it has American roots.

Having said that, though, I would not argue that today's music seems inferior. But do you know how many much older f@rt$ than you and I have been saying that with each new generation?

Dude, it's the way of the world. Find stuff you like, ignore the rest.

(Assuming there are other places to eat)

However.... if there are only 4 places to eat in town and they're ALL McDonalds... then that person has a legitimate bitch .

For me the apex of music was in the 90s, when alt rock was in its peak. I hate classic rock. always have always will. That argument will never go anywhere with me.

There is a ton of good music today. You're not going to find it on FM radio. I find my favorite music on satellite radio... they don't have to appeal to the same stupid tasteless crowd that listens to FM and it is usually very good...

Saying their is no good music out today shows incredible lack of effort on the part of the listener.

I'll agree with that. I grew up in the seventies, and they used a Leslie rotating horn and neat effects, and inspired your imagination. I heard Cold Play on SNL last night, Wasn't impressed. I'll just stick to my CD's of bands I like. Most music these days is Autistic expression, not true music.
