Does anyone here play the fife?

I decided myself to learn to play one.

One problem- I can't get a note out of the thing!!

Anyone got any ideas/help?

Can you blow across a bottle and make a sound? It's very similar.... you blow mostly across the hole (not all into it like it looks like).

I don't play but have friends that did... I managed to get a few notes out of one.... biggest thing is to purse your lips and then *relax* and blow across . Make sure you are covering the holes well, you want to use the pads of your fingers to cover them......

I actually played the fife for a summer as part of a job at Fort George in Niagara on the Lake, ON. It was about 16 years ago!

I play Irish Flute and they are fairly similar. Try this video, the guy explains the very basics and his lesson helped me alot.
