I like listening to thrash metal and in my 20's used to play nothing but that on bass. Then I quit before taking up the bass again beginning of this year, playing Top40 covers and older rock songs.

So recently when the opportunity came up to audition for a thrash/hardcore metal band, I answered.

Now I'm learning 2 songs that I like listening to, but find myself uninspired to actually learn and play them, yet this was THE only genre I would play when I first started, and I'm at a loss to understand why I enjoy listening to the music but don't seem to be enjoying playing it as much anymore...

Anyone else get that? Did you figure out why?

Cheers,

Sometimes learning to play songs that you really like de-mystifies the whole experience... sometimes, some songs are just rather boring to play...

I used to listen to nothing but punk and hardcore when I first picked up the bass and so those are the types of bands I was in, but have no interest in playing that style anymore. For me it's just a matter of not being angry all the time like I was as a teenager. If I don't feel it I don't really want to play it.

When I started playing bass, my teacher would have me learn jazz licks and rythms on bass and improvise jazz pieces, while I still pretty much only listen to metal.

I love the genre, but it's just not that interesting to play on bass.

I can listen to the Ramones all day long, but I wouldn't want to play more than one or two Ramones songs on a given night...

Sometimes the music you like to hear the most isn't the most fun to play.

Exactly.I have a heavy metal band and I don't enjoy playing the songs like I used to.I want to play jazz indeed but I'm not good enough to play jazz.
