Does playing flats change hearing rounds?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have been playing flats for about 1,5 years now, and I seldom hear live music.

Been to a concert yesterday, and could hardly hear the bass, in all 3 combos. I somewhat doubt they had a bad soundguy, as everything else was fine - big subwofers too. I just had trouble locating the bass, and the foundation was missing.

Could it be I am not used to hearing roundwounds in a live setting anymore? It was really strange, especially with that one hip-hop band (Pi, Dr, B). I felt the urge to ask the soundguy where the bass was, but I doubt one would mix such a band without fat bass (and they had their own soundguy).

Any clues?

With a flatwound, you hear more of the fundamental pitch.
With roundwounds you hear more of the overtone series added to the fundamental pitch. Depending on the eq settings, roundwounds can definitely sound less focused in some situations.
