Does Tinnitus affect pitch recognition?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have mild tinnitus in my right ear. It's lingered for the past year or thereabouts, so I'm pretty sure its permanent. It doesn't affect my hearing and during the day at the office etc I can't even tell.

I've never had a strong ear for picking up notes, but I'm wondering if tinnitus makes it a little more difficult to pick out chords and notes.

I presume the ringing aligns to a pitch so at a guess I think it would colour chords some, but I just don't know if volume is a factor etc, and I don't have access to a hearing specialist (yet) to find out.

A mild case, no. A bad case, yes. I've had tinnitus for years, a constant ringing. In the past 2 it's turned into a sometimes unbearable roar. The ringing is prety much always there for me, and the roar (more of like a REALLY LOUD squeeling) can get set off by a car horn, a high pitched squeak, loud noises, a gig... lots of things. It sucks bad. And once something sets it off, it's with me for a while. Sometimes days. Protect your ears bigtime from here on.

Thanks Joe. Mines pretty mild. In normal situations I can't tell its happening, just when its quiet (like trying to sleep or pick out basslines in headphones) or I plug my right ear.

I should probably be more concerned about preventing it than it affecting my pitch perception and how to 'work with it' so to speak
