Does your style vary from bass to bass?

This isn't something I've recently discovered, but I've never thought about discussing it until now...I guess I've got too much time on my hands (???) - Don't tell my boss!

Anyway, I've noticed when I play my 4-string, I tend to play more pizzicato and more horizontally on the neck, whereas when I play my 6-string, I tend to play more fluid bass lines, more in-the-groove and laid back, and more vertically.

Similarly, even from 4-string to 4-string or from 6-string to 6-string, I've noticed my style varies, depending on the feel of the bass and the general tones the bass produces.

Has anyone else noticed this in their playing?

Actually, I do! I play my Ric fairly close to the bridge and seem to favor precise, clipped notes.

My precision I play right by the neck and seem to favor fatter notes.

Not at all...I only play 4's but it's 'me' whether it's a Jazz, P, or a P-J.
My 'style' may vary on the type of music being played.

You've hit upon the reason lots of players own lots of basses. Every bass I own plays a certain way. And, as a result, I play a certain way.

So get out there and buy another bass...................

I have noticed that I do this. On my Fbass I tend to play a lot of slap and more technical stuff while on my peavey I like to lay a solid groove and not a many notes. I play the peavey in my band (I need the low B, my F is a four string) so that might be why I play that way.

Absolutely. I play 34" Fender Precision necked instruments mostly. Hand me a narrow necked bass, something with more than four strings, or a short scale instrument, my playing varies greatly.

This is why I switch instruments if I'm ever stuck in a rut.

Certainly!

On my thunderbird I usually play metal and stuff, only becuase It has a great thumpy sound. that and its in drop C tuning

On the steinberger I play everything really. Great access to all the frets, I usually play alot of metallica and similar on this bass only becuase I love the the neck

On the fender I play alot of blues, early rock and so on.

Right on!
I play my fretless differently and more musically, (I feel...), than my fretted. I suppose if I got into funk, more, I'd get a bass set up just for that and it would be played differently, also.

Yup. Different basses = different styles of expression!

Same thing, different words

My bass of choice changes according to style. There are certain songs on our list that work best w/a particular bass, & I bring what will work best(& a spare or two).
