As a surprise birthday gift to my wife, I took her to see Don Henley in concert at Wente Vineyards on Sept 20, 2010. Wente Vineyards is located in northern California near Livermore. It's a great venue......upscale dining tables on the lawn, and that is your seat for the show.
Don Henley rocked! My wife and I are long-time Eagles fans (since 1971), but we had never been to a Don Henley solo performance. His band was comprised of many of the guys who are currently touring with the Eagles.
Don is, IMO, one of the best singers on this planet. What a voice! He is in his early 60's, and he still sounds the same as he did back in the 70's. And the band rocked the house!
Plus, Don has such a great sense of humor. There was a moment between songs where he looked at the audience and said, "did any of you happen to see the music awards on TV the other day?..............what has happened?..............what the he!! has happened?" The crowd was cracking up!
If you ever get a chance to see Don in concert, you should go. Highly recommended!!

My brother was Mojo Nixon's sound man for a stretch. Mojo had a song called "Don Henley Must Die!" It went something like:
Don Henley must die!
Don Henley must die!
Don't let him get back
Together with Glen Fry!
One night Mojo was playing at the Hole in the Wall here in Austin, and when he started up Don Henley Must Die!, Don Henley came out of the audience, got on stage with the band, and joined in singing the choruses.
The guy has a sense of humor, too. |

I have been there for a few shows myself. The most notable recent one was the ZZ Top show earlier this summer. Just great to see the boys from Tejas doing their thing - but also throwing some real interesting twists into the mix as well.

What a great venue! No matter where you sit, you aren't very far from the stage. Our table was about 50 feet from Don Henley, and our table was center stage. It was great.

Yeah, Don doesn't exactly have the reputation of having a "warm, personable" personality. But he is not a follower, and I admire that in a person. Plus, I think he has softened (a bit) over the years. His "Everything Is Different Now" video sends such a message. Getting married and having kids changed him for the better.

I'm no Don Henley, but getting married and having kids saved my life! Of course, it also ultimately made my hair go grey too, but this is price we pay for long term contentment.
" What are these voices outside love's open door
Make us throw off our contentment
and beg for something more?"
