I'm very surprised that this news wasn't more widely reported; your posting this info was a surprise to me
Donald Byrd was a GREAT musician; a very iinovative and creative player.
"Stepping Into Tomorrow" with Chuck Rainey on bass is still very fresh for me.
I watch a fair amount of news and I must have missed it or they didn't report it, not even on the Grammies. Byrd's music was a big influence on me when I was was going from a young rocker kid to digging more groove jazz back in the 70's.

"... In addition to his master's from Manhattan School of Music, Byrd had two master's degrees from Columbia University. He received a law degree in 1976, and his doctorate from Columbia University Teachers College in 1982."
Sorry to hear this. I saw a 'reunion concert' of the Blackbyrds in Detroit three or four years ago (opening for Herbie Hancock at a wonderful outside venue on the Detroit Riverfront. Joyous concert. I believe Donald was already at that time too ill to travel.
