I'm thinking of maybe donating one of my basses to an organization that spreads music and helps underprivileged youth discover music. I did a search for such organizations and found a bunch. I'm not quite sure what the best one to donate to would be. Has anyone else does this before, and if so, which organization did you donate to?

One of my teachers used to teach in that program and I went to see a recital. It was local youngsters grouped into trios and quartets who had been practicing beginners jazz standards. Sometimes the instructor played one of the parts, sometimes not. If this program still exists it may something you would like to support.
Peace,
S

| | curiously looking back at what once was beautiful | | Join Date: Aug 2008 Location: Oregon | | I once donated a bass to a guy going down to provide hurricane Katrina relief. I'm not sure the bass actually made it in to the hands of a needy musician, though. (I guess most bass players would have managed to get out with at least one gig bag...)
In the future, I think I'd only donate directly to a recipient. Otherwise, if there's a worthy organization, they can always use money. Physical items they have to store and sort and transport - money can be sent and used immediately wherever needed.
Just my exp - good luck.

I'd recommend first considering if there are any organizations you feel close to. For example, underprivileged children? Cancer / Leukemia? Diabetes?
IMO, the best way to feel good about donating is to start with one that's close to your heart.
I applaud you for making such an incredible gesture! Just think...someone who really wants to play but doesn't have the means may be on the receiving end of that bass...it's gonna make someone incredibly happy - and you're to thank for that!

Find an inner city public school and they would accept your donation willingly. With the economy like it is most schools are not willing to fund new instruments, so any donation would be welcomed.
