Long ago, I came to the realization that "bass is easy" is what the majority of the population thinks (assuming they even know what a bass is! lol). When I hear those comments now I just let 'em go.

anyway, this kind of thinking doesn't apply in pro enviroments [I haven't got that kind of comment in a looooooooooooong time] |

Shut him right up.

They think because you are playing only one string at a time (typically) and that there are only four strings, by default it must be easier. They don't understand that bass is more of a rhythm instrument and is not meant to be glaring and obvious. Most don't understand the feel aspect of the bass.
Anthony Wellington made a great point on bass playing... he said if someone comes up to him and says, "I love the notes you played" he has not done his job. However, if someone comes up and says, "It just felt great playing with you" then he HAS done his job. That's an aspect that a lot of people don't understand. Bass often has a very intangible quality to it. |

Hell, sucking on any instrument is easy! |

I had to give him credit for that one, it stuck with me.

There are instances where it may be, but the variables are so many that this statement is hardly qauntifiable.
