Don't hate them for making an ignorant statement. Just hand them an unlined fretless or a 6 string and let them see how easy it is!

Hate? No. Feel sorry for? Yes. Their minds work on the simple principal that four strings, being fewer than six, must therefore be easier to play.

I've been hearing it all my life. It doesn't really phase me at this point.

Long ago, I came to the realization that "bass is easy" is what the majority of the population thinks (assuming they even know what a bass is! lol). When I hear those comments now I just let 'em go.

not only that, they think bass is easy to play because most bassist write crappy lines that do the same all the time.

anyway, this kind of thinking doesn't apply in pro enviroments [I haven't got that kind of comment in a looooooooooooong time]

Doesn't bother me at all. The last time someone said something like that to me I handed him my Lakland 55-01 and said, "Here. Go for it."

Shut him right up.

It is annoying. People who tend to say such stupid things are often guitarists. I am a guitarist too. They think because you are playing only one string at a time (typically) and that there are only four strings, by default it must be easier. They don't understand that bass is more of a rhythm instrument and is not meant to be glaring and obvious. Most don't understand the feel aspect of the bass.

Anthony Wellington made a great point on bass playing... he said if someone comes up to him and says, "I love the notes you played" he has not done his job. However, if someone comes up and says, "It just felt great playing with you" then he HAS done his job. That's an aspect that a lot of people don't understand. Bass often has a very intangible quality to it.

To be fair, I find that bass is quite simple to pick up. To master however, well...

most people say that because bassists usually only play one note at a time. Ask them if they call a viol instrument easy. or a flute. a sax. trumpet. etc

I never found it any easier than guitar, keyboards, or drums though.

Hell, sucking on any instrument is easy!

Why let it bother you? If they've heard you play and then tell you it sounds easy, take it as a compliment The greatest musicians make the hard stuff sound like anyone could do it, right?

I don't hate them, I just ignore them. Ironically, these are often the same morons that complain that it's hard to find a good bass player.

My guitar player once said it best: "most guitar players who try to play bass sound like....a guitar player trying to play bass".

I had to give him credit for that one, it stuck with me.

Yeah, its like a lot of things in life, any fool can do it, but only a pro can do it right every time. Saying bass is easy is like saying working on a car is easy. There are instances where it may be, but the variables are so many that this statement is hardly qauntifiable.

Nope, I just hand them mine, "Here show me how easy it is", mine's left handed at that.
