Doubling on guitar...

OK...go ahead and flame me for going over to the "Dork Side"...lol...but I played guitar in church last night...it was really cool...first time I EVER played guitar in public (other than practice)...I've played drums dozens of times, and I'm a regular bassist at church...but when the oother bassist who was supposed to lead worship last night decided he couldn't (sore throat) he rang me and asked me if I didn't mind him playing instead...I asked him if he needed a guitarist...He said they were trying to get one for the evening... so I offered...

I struggled a bit at first, because I had to concentrate a bit more (not used to playing the songs on guitar, of course)...but once I got into it, it was awesome!...

I still prefer bass by a long shot, but I'm trying to stretch myself as a musician...

anyone else out there, double up (or triple up)?

I sorta double on guitar in my band from time to time. But I've also doubled on clarinet (my primary instrument) at jazz festivals where I was playing bass.

I started out playing bass because I wanted to be Paul McCartney.

By the time I was 12 or so I realized that only playing by myself and at lessons wasn't a heck of a lot of fun, and no one my age was doing any kind of band. I picked up guitar just so what I could do made more musical sense.

Over the years it's changed back and forth from what my "primary" instrument is. Although there have been times that I'm more comfortable on guitar, I've always been a "better" bass player.

I double up, but my "main' instrument is guitar and not bass. I don't know if it's a personality type issue, but I'm just a better guitarist than a bassist. But from playing bass, I sure learned that it's every bit as significant (if not more) than the wailing lead guitar that gets all the attention. I'm much more impressed with a very good bassist than a good guitar player, probably because I don't have the talent to be a great bassist - good but not great.

Yeah I used to double up all the time, not ashamed of it. Just really hated it! Never live though, i could just pull off lead guitar bits better than my old bands lead guitarist - then i simplified them for him to play live

Oh my head right now!
