"My Sharona" was one of the songs that made me scream in my early teens. I'll give a spin to my "Get The Knack" LP in his memory. R.I.P. Mr. Fieger.

While The Knack had some other hit songs, My Sharona was an enormously popular song and was the #1 of record of the year for 1979.

The first thing that struck me was sadness at his passing. Thanks for the tunes Doug.

The second thing that struck me is that I'll probably be playing My Sharona this weekend. And next weekend. And the weekend after that......

BTW, I've been told by bandmates and local rock musicians that nobody plays "My Sharona" like me . Not because my playing has something special, but because nobody in town knows the song as well as me, and I think it's true. I can even sing the guitar solo's melody line in its entirety and still haven't found a guitarist that can play it note for note. Also, I perfectly know when the drummer must switch during the guitar solo from quarter notes with the ride cymbal to eighth notes to punk-style crash cymbal. Everybody in the band follows me every time we play it.

I just follow the drummer. He grew up on the East side of Michigan. I don't think we've played that tune in 2 or 3 years. It's going to take a quick dusting off before we take it out.

I never really understood why "Get the Knack" has been criticized so harshly over the years. Maybe now people will finally get off that bandwagon and acknowledge what a fantastic piece of pop rock that album has always been.

RIP, Doug.

Doug Fieger August 20, 1952 - February 14, 2010 RIP

My Sharona was a set list fixture in Dick 'n The Donuts (a mainly 50's & 60's cover band I was with back in '82).

Ah yes... Waking up hungover in a Holiday Inn while not remembering which one...

Agreed. I remember the "nuke the Knack" movement. The only thing these guys were guilty of was writing great pop hooks that never got out of your head. We should all be so fortunate to write that way!

The Knack - Good Girls Don't (2005)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09yiqihY-TA

The Knack and The Romantics were two bands from that era that had similar styles of fun, pop rock, hook laden songs. Those were great songs that have stood the test of time as well. Those bands inspired bands like The Gin Blossoms and others later on.

I've just started re listening to them again for the first time in years. I hear alot of Cheap Trick in their music as well. Especially, Good Girl's Don't........

All that's stuck in my head now is Cheech singin, "My Scrotum!"......

Hi.

RIP Doug.

I know I'll probably be hated by saying this, but for me th rest of the "Get The Knack" was a HUGE dissapointment back in the day.

I only knew the "My Sharona", and as I saw the LP in a flea market some 15 years ago, I bought it.

For me the rest of the songs on that album must've been written, recorded and produced by someone totally unrelated to those who did My Sharona.

Perhaps this is just one of those "You had to be there to get it" things .

And perhaps, just perhaps, I have to hook up the trusty turntable once again to give it another go?

Regards
Sam

I thought I was the only one that could sing the guitar solo!! It is IMHO,one of the finest guitar solos ever written. Just a joy to listen to. RIP Doug!
