Drawing on an acoustic guitar

Sign in to disble this ad
I just got my old acoustic guitar out and started playing again. The wood on top is extremely light and I want to draw something on it. What would stay on best? There's a finish on it so I wasn't sure if sharpie would stick all that well. I was thinking of sanding the finish off, painting over it and putting a finish on it, but that seems like a lot of work. Would a plain old sharpie work?

I wanna draw entirely over my guitar, so I'll need to remove the pickguard. How are pickguard attached to acoustic guitars? Will it leave a sticky residue?

If i remember correctly they are just stuck on, so yes it will probably leave some residue but with abit of scrubbing that should come off quite easily.

Visit some tattoo parlors for some interesting art work examples and ideas. Searching Google for tattoos related to something that interests you should also provide a lot of ideas.

Nice idea. I was thinking of a drawing kinda similar to old japanese art. I don't want just a symbol or something, but a big mural-like piece that covers the whole guitar.

Like this?

My wife did this on her little Dean with a sharpie. She later added more to the top of the body, but it is rubbing off with her arm when she plays. Someone told her to spray clear Krylon or some other coating over it to preserve it.

I was thinking of a Japanese old art styled landscape like the picture I posted above. I think the Krylon would be a good idea.
