Are they prepared to bring in a drummer who doesn't overplay? That band should have at least one member who understands the concept of "tasteful restraint"...

Mangini already has the seat. I was voting for Marco myself but Mangini is super solid.

They have. James LaBrie never overplays the shaker during instrumental sections.

I find them repeat things i aleady heard from them. The guitar riff is sometimes cool, but the whole thing doesn't move me. Drums are lower in the mix than Portnoy era: Petrucci and Rudess won !

I never understand comments like this one. It's not over playing; this is what the genre is. The fans of this genre don't want restraint; we want face melting shred.

A discussion for a different thread, I suppose...

I've been to three DT concerts during the past 12 years or so. Each time, I wanted very much to like them. Their mindblowing chops are simply undeniable.

But on each occasion, after sitting through more than an hour, during which each member seemingly tried to cram as many notes as humanly possible into each measure (especially Petrucci) - simultaneously and non-stop - my mind began to shut down under the constant onslaught, and it all became like one long, sustained auditory blur...

It occurred to me that ultimately, notes derive their greatest significance from rests...and that music largely lacking in rests ultimately diminishes the value of the notes as well...
