They should have Travis Orbin play for them.

I can't even imagine coming in and trying to learn that material. Mike Portnoy is one of the top 3 drummers in the world in that particular genre. Not to mention he was the founder of the band. Immense shoes to fill for the new guy.

It probably came down to him and Virgil. From that video, Mike fit in perfectly. I still would have liked to see Travis Orbin get an audition, he would have fit in really well IMO.

I`ve just seen the 1st episode and looks interesting.
I guess it`s been hard to decide between top drummers like Mangini, Donati, Minnemann, Roddy, etc.

IMHO, they`re at the same or even higher level than Portnoy.

Ultimately if there are three or four equally, supremely talented players in contention, I would assume it will come down to the same tiebreaker any weekend warrior bar band uses... who's the best "hang" i.e., who fits best with the rest of the band personality wise?

Why don't they just release who the drummer is instead of stringing their fans along (Am i missing something here?). This is very annoying.

It`s obviously part of a marketing strategy.
They`ve decide to produce a "reality show" style documental to sell a bit more.

They`ve reached the top of the heavy prog ladder based on their musicianship and the way they sell their image.

Well I have to admit the doc is really interesting but I would be just as interested if I already knew the guy who won.

Yes, it's official!!! Mike Mangini is the new drummer of Dream Theater!!

YouTube - RoadrunnerRecords's Channel watch the final episode here.

Mike is an incredible talent and for those who haven't seen him yet... you are in for a treat!
I have the pleasure to know Mike personally and toured with him during the 80's!
He is without a doubt THE best fit for this band!!

Congrats, to Mike and watch for Dream Theaters new album with Mike and a World Tour coming soon!

So now they've had two Mikes... two Kevins... two Johns... if Derek Roddy had been picked he'd be the 2nd Derek.

I'm glad Mangini got the job, based on that documentary at least. I've not heard his stuff, but the videos they showed of his audition were pretty amazing, and he really did seem to be the one who was most into playing with the band. I think they chose the right guy.

yeah, that's what i was thinking right when i saw the first audition. he's like all the good things about portnoy minus all the lame attitude and megalomania. he was obviously the perfect fit for them.

although would have been cool if they picked the guy from iceland, i really liked him. the guy from austria too - he was a machine.

wow, i'm jealous. he's a monster, i'd have loved to gigged with him. and yeah, i'm glad he got the gig, he's perfect for the band.

i'm psyched for the next dream theater album, something i haven't been able to say sincerely for about a decade heh. i can see john & john doing some really great stuff together, stuff that i think might have gotten steamrolled in the past by mr. personality.

Ignoring the cheesy-reality style drama, this was a cool look into the auditions. As someone pointed out, Dream Theater is where they are today because of their legions of loyal fans. It certainly is not because their music appeals to the masses.

All the drummers nailed Phases I & II. It was Phase III that Mike really showed why he is so great: he looked over the charts, time signatures, and nailed something he never heard before. All of those drummers could have gotten it with rehearsal. Mike nailed it out of the gate. Impressive.

This was a really cool way to allow their fans to feel like part of the process, get behind someone they liked, and root for them - and get invested in the new lineup. Admittedly, after seeing Mike's audition, I was rooting for him - everything just seemed to fit, and he had a great rapport with the band already.

Personally, my favorite DT material is '92-'00. The albums since "Scenes..." never hit me like their older material and I haven't followed them closely over the past 10 years or so. The whole Portnoy departure and auditions and "who will be the next drummer" thing has reignited my interest in the band. I am looking forward to the next album, and I'm going back through my CDs and giving the 6 Degree / Train of Thought / Octavarium / Black Clouds another listen.

A little interview with MM after he got 'it':

Dream Theater: Interview mit Portnoy-Nachfolger Mike Mangini - METAL HAMMER

It appears to me that MP's departure may signal JM's active return to participating in composition/writing lyrics. A little bit more freedom for everybody in the band, IMO. Can't wait for the next album
