Is drop tuning essential?

Hello TBers,

I was just kind of thinking of an upcoming jam session I am doing with a bunch of musicians that I haven't met before and the goal is is to read some chord/lyric charts and jam in a full band setting.

It got me thinking as to whether or not I would need to drop my tuning. I started thinking about it and it seems like there are ways around it. If I came up to an Eb7 (for instance), couldn't I just play the octave higher Eb, or use inversions like G, Bb, or even Db?

Sure, if I was in a cover band that is strictly playing the same lines as the studio-recorded counterpart, or the key of the song is in Eb, then it may not get so pretty. But I do feel like for most cases there are ways around it.

Any thoughts?

No need to detune unless there are very specific bass notes that are below low E that need to be played as written.

indeed. /\/\/\

I would say that if you're putting together original songs, drop/alternate tunings have their uses. IMO of course.

For just reading chord charts - no, I can't see why it would be necessary at all.
