Drum advice

Hey, my church's youth group now has 500 possibly 700 dollars to buy our first drumset. Our church is small, maybe 30 members (including the flaky ones.) the youth group band, 5 full time members. we are now using a snare drum. for the record, we play folk and gospel styles. we were looking at a yamaha DTXplorer. with fundraising, we could push the budget to 1000 dollars. i've heard that an electric kit could inhibit the developing drummers. another says electric is the only way to go for such a small church. i don't know what to do. go w/ what sounds best or what is the best for the young drummers. please help.

Electric kits are very versatile and can be had new for as little as $500 (Alesis). Playing an electric kit would only inhibit a developing drummer by creating a disconnect between how hard they hit and the volume they produce, but this can be just as beneficial as the drummer won't have to hit hard (potentially harmful) to play loudly.

I do tons and tons of church rock events.

If starting from scratch, I'd be going with electronic and dealing with the complaints from the drummers and grattitude from the congregation.

It's tough to control cymbols in a church setting..
