that depends on what you want to use it for. if you just want to jam to the built in patterns they're very simple - if you want to make your own drum beats you're going to have to know a bit about how to play the drums, if you want to get them to the point where you can use them for a live show then it does get a bit tricky

I have an alesis drum machine (bought it off craig's list couldnt tell you the model), it's not too hard to work. Also programming beats on it isnt too hard my bro made a simple one in about an hour by just playing with it.

aquablue,

By joining Talkbass and figuring out how to post you've just proved that you are tech-savy enough to master a drum machine!

If you want to gig with preset beats but don't want to carry and set up a computer, a drum machine may be right for you.

But if you want to practice and create music at home, you may want to consider trying a drum plugin for your computer. Something like EZDrummer or BFD Eco sounds great, cost less than most decent drum machines, and is at least as straight forward to understand and use.

Well, the plugins may have more options to boggle you with; but otoh, they also have decent visual computer interfaces, so that makes them easier to grasp and manipulate. Good luck.
