Drummer Rant

OK, it's a slow thread day so here goes...........

There are no drummers in Seattle, or Washington for that matter. Ok, maybe there are a FEW, I've played with a couple of the very best in these parts but unless you're shelling out dough good luck with that.

The rag-tag, un-talented, low-lifes that have auditioned for my band never cease to amaze me, and when you do come across the rare talented ones, you can't rely on them to show up or actually learn a song.

I'm not talking about cover musicians here, I know all the "cover guys" will chime in saying "That's the only way to get paying gigs". Whatever, I could teach or do session work and make more money than I can playing Mustang Sally in some dive bar for the five hundredth time. My day job pays me WAAAAY better than even the pretty sucessful tribute band I played in. Playing covers doesn't inspire me in the least, aren't ther any talented drummers that feel the same way? Do they not have passion for creating music? My brother believes, and I'm starting to agree with him, that from a drummers point of view, they aren't necessarily writing the songs anyway so there is little difference to them between playing covers and playing originals.

It's gotten to the point where I'm starting to feel like I'm in Spinal Tap going on our seventh drummer. Not because they choked on there own vomit or went up in a ball of spontanious human combustion, it's because only a handful of elite guys up here can actually play well and want to do it. And below that there is another group of good players that can play, but they just want to jam on blues because there's no "work" involved in that.

Can't take it anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oddly enough I moved here from Cali, and yep I do know a few good drummers in LA that would fit the bill. I think that makes it even more frustrating!

I began my musical journey in middle school as a drummer and can tell you from personal experience that, as a drummer, I definitely felt a disconnect between me and whatever song I played. I played drums throughout high school and always tried to introduce material to the groups I played with and met resistance (it didn't help that everything I wrote in high school sucked, lol) which led to my eventual disregarding of music performance for a while.

But I also think that a certain personality gravitate toward playing drums. I played in a group as a bassist and the drummer did not give a crap what melody the guitar played, just so long as he could do as many fills as possible. Every song sounded like a drum solo!

I find this mentality is more pervasive in the rock community, but I also find guitarists in rock bands are also unable to tell me what chords they are playing, or the key of the song, etc...so maybe it is a match made in heaven...
