Drummer(s) You Love(d) to Play With - why?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm starting a running list of things I have really grown to appreciate about good, "pro" (in effect if not in fact) drummers. There are 4 or 5 guys in my town that I enjoy playing with so much that I will jump through hoops to be on their projects, and here are the reasons. They range in age from under 30 to over 60 but they all have these things in common:

1) They have great time AND feel. Time as in not rushing or dragging, feel as in knowing where to put the beat, whether to play straight or swing, etc.

2) They play balanced and with great dynamics. This means all pieces of the kit played at appropriate volume relative to each other and the song. Many younger / less accomplished drummers I have worked play too loudly on the top half of the kit (cymbals and snare) and have a wimpy kick. I need a drummer who will put their foot into that pedal and give me something solid to lock on to.

3) They bring as much kit as the gig requires - but no more. Stages around here are small. These guys realize their impact isn't made by how big their kit is, but what they do with it.

4) They prepare ahead of time. Every one of these guys does his homework, learning the material on their own time, writing out cheat notes to use on the gig, etc. Invariably they are the best prepared musician in the band (next to yours truly of course ).

5) They have a team approach to their instrument. Specifically they see themselves and the bassist as a partnership of equals, not a dominant/submissive deal. This is compared to other drummers I have worked with whose chops are phenomenal but who make it very clear -- even without words -- that they are the star of the unit and my job is to simply keep up.

6) They are fanatical about keeping their kit well maintained and tuned. Not a lot of EQ, gating or other tech trickery needed with these guys... their sounds come from their kit and are always good.

That's my short list. Feel free to add.

Forgot one:

7) They play consistently. By this I mean, the kick pattern isn't changing every 2 or 4 bars, and they can be counted on to play pretty much the same drum part on the same song every time we play it. They are song oriented and disciplined... they don't check-out halfway through the song and start playing outside s**t just to keep their interest up or impress the hot chick that just walked in.

Nice topic.
I've been a drummer for over 30 years. It's my main instrument.
These points are all aspects that I pay attention to, and appreciate in other drummers too.
Bass is a second language to me...but it's my current love....kind of like a hot mistress.

Of course I realize by just changing a few words the list would also be the qualifications of a good bassist... and hopefully I would fit the bill.

8) Great ear for listening to the other players in the band-this definitely helps with overall song dynamics.

Great stuff!

Great thread!

8) They listen! Both to me and what I'm doing as well as the rest of the band. (Paying attention to the band you'd think is an obvious thing to do, but ... )

11?) Compatibility- I play with the same drummer in two bands now, and neither of us, on our own, are particularly impressive instrumentalists... we're both pretty mediocre... yet our individual styles mesh insanely well and we almost work as one mind, and when we play together, that's when we're impressive. So compatibility I would say is really important... a drummer that makes you sound better and vice versa.

Huge plus-I have this in one of the bands that I'm in right now-don't think the drummer or I are particularly amazing individually, but when we play together, the pocket is so tight, people are always noticing and providing feedback. Good stuff!

I really appreciate a drummer who knows something about what key we're in, harmonies, basic music theory.

Its amazing how a good drummer makes it so much easier to play. I can't even describe it. They just have IT.

Yup. And it's to the point now for me where if I'm paired with a new guy I can peg within the first couple of minutes how well he does (or doesn't) match up to these criteria just by seeing how he interacts with the kit, how he hits, what kind of warm-up licks or beats he plays, etc.
