If you haven't read his articles before, he writes bass articles as well as he records reviews! I think this is a great move for bp |

If you create publication content for a living, there are fewer and fewer places to send an invoice. The bass mag he left BP for folded a while ago. Last I looked, YouTube doesn't pay much either. |

Ed is one of the very best bass journalist and I have great respect for his work.
In fact he is a bit of a bass renaissance man if you consider he is a teacher, a journalist, one of the best author of educational bass books and a working bass player.
Blues is my main focus and I welcome his new column in Bass Player Mag.
After some ups and downs I also look forward to some renewal there.
I have never stopped subscribing since it's one of the very few bass magazine, with Tom Bowlus Bass Gear, France's Bassiste and UK's Bass Guitar Magazine.
Welcome back Ed and best wishes.

I've been writing for them since August actually, but first hit the streets in the October issue. There are some other new voices at the mag too, Jon D'Auria, Freddy Villano, and of course Elton Bradman is back - all three were at GW's Bass Guitar mag before the plug was pulled. I think a lot of great things are happening at BP so thanks for considering subscribing.
Also, if you want to stay in touch with my regular goings on, I have a FB page for the Bass Whisperer. But please - do not friend my personal FB page. |

Ed was the editor back when I started reading that rag in the 90's. Personally, I think BP has slipped downhill a bit over the past few years. I guess I'll have to give it another look now. I've always had a lot of respect for Ed.
Glad you're back at BP, Ed!

I like the mag but I'd need a lot more content before getting a regular subscription. |

While I agree Bass Player's a little on the thin side, the magazine racket is getting tougher as people source their reading content online. Thus advertising revenue goes down in printed media and magazines struggle to pay for content.
I really like Friedland's Edification and writing style etc., I'm glad to see he's got a column...
However, the sections "Dig My Rig", "Bass Player Poll" and particularly "BP Community Court of Opinion"
are a waste of space and ink, IMO. They are simply fillers, easy for the staff to chuck in every month, but like fillers in baked goods, I find the aforementioned sections in BP are difficult to stomach and stick in my craw.
These sections belong, work better, and are better left, online.

Ed is a great teacher and an excellent writer - rarely shared qualities in the bass playing world. Sadly, it's getting harder to be paid well for these virtues, at least by magazines. He deserves this slot and I hope will attract more players willing to spend thirty bucks a year for our "trade pub." Support what you love. (How many of you contribute to TalkBass? Where would you go if IT folded?) |

Feral - I think you should give them your feedback concerning those sections. You can tell them pretty directly on their FB page. Things are getting reconfigured and opinions from the readers are always valuable.
Thanks again. |
