What's with the line bashing? I mean seriously, a fretless bass without lines looks better, sure... but who cares if there is a visual reference? It sounds the same... so who cares?

The only observation that I have to offer is that you can't really "fake it" on an unlined fretless. You've either got it together or you're going to play out of tune. In that sense, it's a great way to develop your ear and become a better player. |

| | | I wouldn't put down another player for having a lined fretless, but I personally wouldn't own one. I think that part of the appeal is the visual of having no frets. It's been a while since I've played my fretless though.

Sometimes people can really miss the point of music entirely.
Too caught up in tools, too caught up in methods, and they seemingly ignore what really matters: the freaking MUSIC. |

| | | | As long as it sounds good I don't care. I've played lined and unlined and had no care in the world about the lines/lack of.

He couldn't have had good ears if he was using a lined, right? |

I just prefer the look of an unlined board, but do like to have the little side markers as a referece point.

| | | | Jaco had lines on his fretless
Edgar Meyer has dots on his fingerboard.
That should be enough to end any arguments.
If I ever get a custom fretless, it will have partial lines, that should make everyone happy. |

...yeah, same with Jaco, once I realized he had just removed his frets and covered the board with epoxy, allowing him to see where the frets were originally, I knew he was a cheater and could not stand how he sounded any longer.
(...ain't sarcasm a glorious thing? )
