The Electric Guitar Strap

If I remember correctly, I've been a member on TalkBass forums for quite some time now, but this is my first post. Anyways, I've been wondering about this for awhile... when was it that wearing your guitar or bass low started to happen? I know it's all based on personal preference and comfort. But I recently just finished watching the Beatles Anthology DVD and they showed an old clip of the Rolling Stones performing a song that the Beatles had written. And off to the side you could see Keith Richards with his guitar up high, across his stomach. But when he performs today, he's got his guitar slung down much lower and it led me to wonder why, even in the case of Keith Richards, the guitar strap height would go from one level to another. I know when punk rock came about, it seemed to be a part of the image that punk rock produced and that led to influence many generations of music since. I don't know if this question has a definitive answer, but I was just curious as to what others thought.

I could see that as he seemed like one of the first to do so upon first thought... I wonder why he would ride it low? A move at try to look different I guess? Ha.

'Cause he used to play bass with The Yardbirds, and he got accustomed to slinging it low...

I could see that. But players before him, from my knowledge, were accustomed to wearing it high. It's interesting to look at some players such as Peter Hook who was influenced by Paul Simonon, hence why Peter Hook had it slung so low. I'm just curious as to where it started... it's kind of pointless, but oh well ha.
