I know little about drums, but how is this kit as beginner electronic kits go? I have a smaller kit now but it has limited capabilities and isnt built for long term use. Would this simmons be much of an upgrade?

What is your limited kit that you already have? I've never heard of anyone being happy with the new Simmons drums. They have absolutely nothing in common with the old Simmons drums we loved in the 80's. Ahh, if only I could find (and afford!) a nice SDS-7 with tons of modules and a bunch of mint condition original riot-shield trigger pads...

Ion and Alesis drums are definitely different beasts. I don't know that you'd actually get much more from a modern Simmons kit over what you already have. I'd save my pennies for an Alesis, Yamaha, or low end Roland electronic kit.

Note that I only play acoustic drums and cymbals. Google up some good electronic drummers' forums and ask for advice there. I'd imagine you'd get a whole lot more replies than you would on TalkBass.

Good luck!
