Equipment selling etiquette

Let's say you list a bass for sale on Monday. Tuesday, Guy A calls, says he's interested and will see about picking up the bass from you later in the week. Wednesday Guy B calls and says he wants to come over that day and take a look at it. Do you say to Guy B:

1. Come on over!

2. I've got an offer from another guy who called first, I'll take down your number and let you know what happens.

Is option 1 rude at all? Is option 2 common courtsey? I feel like I may lose both buyers if I try to be the nice guy in this situation.

If you're gonna lose both, than screw being a nice guy. Let dude number two, who has the courtsey to make time today, have the first crack, since he clearly wants it more.

Good question.

I actually went through something similar today and went with option 1 because the original 'interested' party hadn't made a firm commitment to purchase.

Unless I've got a written commitment (or verbal commitment if it's over the phone) to buy a piece of equipment, then the equipment is still available for other buyers.

"Interest" does not equal "purchase" in my book.

That's just my method though.

I always tell Guy A sure you can come by, but if Guy B comes up with the money first, it's sold. That usually weeds out the chumps real quick.

I got burned that way selling a snowmobile.guy A said-"I'll take it,I'll pay you in 2 weeks".No money down either.Had people call left and right and stop over, could have sold it 3 times over. Then in 2 weeks, never hear from the guy so call him and "he found a better deal"...To me-first one with the cash gets it,unless maybe it is a special case like a friend or something.

Thanks for the replies guys.

When Guy B called, I initially told him that I'm in a middle of a deal with another guy and I'd call him back. As soon as I made this post I realised how silly I was and I called Guy B back. In the end, both guys ended up backing out but another guy called today, came right over and bought my bass (79 Fender Precision). Lucky me!
