Ever bought gear in a moment of excitement only to realize later you overpaid badly?

I am absolutely beating myself over the head right now. I was on Ebay at like 1 AM last night, bleary, saw a somewhat rare baritone guitar I had GASsed over a few times in the past, got excited and said "what the heck" and bought it. In the morning I was clear-headed and realized that I had paid about twice the going value of the instrument. GAAHHHH.

Dude, that sucks!!!

I've done similar (not quite twice the going rate) but bad enough - on the other hand I've also made off like a bandit a few of times...

You need to go shopping - get a screamin deal to make up for it & all will be well...

I have done this in the past.

Following this rule has greatly curbed my (over)spending:

don't drink and ebay

I've done it once or twice. I've also seen absolute steals and missed out on them because I told myself I needed to think it over to be sure (doh!).

I didn't over pay like you did. But,I purchased a Ken Smith Melvin Davis 7-string some years ago. What in the hell was I thinking? Here I was, playing in a cover/originals bar band, along with the somewhat steady studio work, lugging this beast around. I think I just wanted something that NO ONE ELSE was gonna have. What an idiot I was for spending that much DeNiro on something that would not REALLY benefit me. It was an amazing, super high-quality bass, for sure. But after 10 months or so,I sold it,along with an early Yamaha John Pattitucci 6-string.
I just couldn't justify havin' that much cash invested in basses that I wouldn't use on a somewhat regular basis.

Five strings is high as I'll go,thank you.

I've never had it happen, but I wouldn't beat yourself up over it. If you buy something you really, really like, price is relative.

On a similar note, I never buy something and talk about it on the internet that someone else didn't claim to have gotten MUCH cheaper. I don't know why some people take such glee in trying to make you feel bad. I always say, there's telling prices (what you say you paid) and there's paying prices (what you actually paid) and on the internet I think they are much different. I keep hearing about these great $1,200 Rickenbacker basses, but I've never seen one that wasn't beat to hell.

There's your problem, right there I fully endorse sleep as the most correct activity after midnight, unless you are caring for a baby, fornicating or making music.

Not really but what does seem to happen to me a lot is, I am looking to buy something used but it never seems to show up so I go out and buy a new one. Then a bunch show up used for half the price!

Not exactly what your talking about but I just have to share this. I had a spur of the moment buy and bought a warlock back in February, when it arrived at my door I noticed many dead spots on the neck so I sent it back in exchange for a new one. Since I'm a regular at a shop in town they heard about the ordeal and got jealous of me not ordering it through them so the girl behind the counter bought the same bass for me without even telling me and demanded I cancel my transaction with the other company. That turned into a huge problem since they kept calling each other and arguing. Eventually it got resolved and my local shop sold me it including case for $530 when the bass alone retails at $600. Once I got home I gave it a setup and couldn't get it playing to my liking. I then noticed a dent in the third fret on the A string which made the note unplayable. I told the shop about it and all they said was, "we could give you a number to a guy who can fix it, it'll cost ya." Every time I played it I got reminded of the struggle the shop put on me with the damn thing and the dent in the fret so I ended up just not touching it and let it sit in my closet. I took the bass out 2 days ago and brought it to Guitar Center, they offered $240, I accepted that and then used the money to buy a Sansamp BDDI. I know I took a huge loss of money on it but at least I'll use the sansamp and enjoy it rather than having that B.C Rich sit in my closet mocking me.

Only once. Bought a Morely VOL pedal, used, for more than I should have. After I no longer needed it I made a pretty decent trade with it, though, so the world was once again balanced.
