I've had similar experiences to those above, namely Fragile and Boston (Third Stage, to be specific.) I bought Fragile a little while ago based solely on the cover. Good move.

Borrowed my dad's copy of Third Stage after rifling through his album collection. Haven't given it back yet.

Herb Alpert is great. That "Whipped Cream" cover...

Also, one I don't own but think is killer is Steady As She Goes by Hot Tuna. That's nice art.

Of course! You and probably a good number of others. Cool that the music inside is just as classic as the cover. I remember being very fascinated by that one as a kid looking through my parents albums. I also remember seeing Mick Jagger for the first time on the back of their copy of the 12X5 album cover and getting really scared.

How About Uriah Heep-Demons and Wizards?

Ever take a close look at the source of that waterfall?

I mean...a REALLY close look?

I used to buy Yes albums just for the Roger Dean cover and liner art.
I loved the band, so I pretty much knew Id be getting some great music.

The inside of CLOSE TO THE EDGE IS amazing.

Iwould have loved to have some of whatever he was using for "inspiration" back then.
Wouldn't touch it now, though.

Ever seen the FLASH album?

How about the inside pic on Steppenwolf's FOR LADIES ONLY
Worth tracking down.

This was the album that I picked that I actually liked......very cool pre-punk power pop - well, you define the mid 70's for me!

The cover of the European version of Golden Earring's "Moontan" album would be reason enough to buy it, although it's a great album anyway; in fact, one of my favorites. The American album cover is just an ordinary cover.

What about all the albums that had promo stuff in them?

Alice Cooper's School's Out had a cover that looked like an old flip-top school desk.
When you opened the cover, the inside had a picture of the inside of a desk, with a bunch of stuff a kid might have collected in his school desk, but the first release of the album also contained a pair of panties, made of paper, that added to the collection.
The panties were later banned as a fire hazard in shipping.
I have an album with them.

Billion Dollar Babies had a giant Billion Dollar Bill with pictures of babies with Alice makeup.

Plenty. Most turned out to be turkeys, but the few I've struck gold with are Coroners 'RIP', the Dead Brain Cells debut, High On Fire's 'Blessed Black Wings' and perhaps the jewel in the crown, the second, self-titled Clutch record.

Ive bought albums without ever hearing a track because I like the artist.
Ive never bought an album just because of the artwork, but I dont judge those who have.

Several. But two that come to mind are Iron Maiden and Dust. Dust has two Vikings fighting on a mountain top. Had no idea what either band sounded like.

I've seen both those Alice Cooper albums. They're very cool!

Not to mention killer bass work from Dennis Dunaway. A great bassist, whose name isn't brought up nearly enough in bassist discussions. Our band selecting to do a cover of Billion Dollar Babies was the kick I needed to begin looking for my fretless.

Sticky Fingers had a real zipper on the early release cover.

I've had that since it came out (actually 2, one that has never been played).

I'm going home and check it out. Never really looked at it that close but I love the music. One of my favorite bands.

Having been a fan of CREEPY and EERIE magazines since college,
I think Ive bought every album Ive ever seen with a Frank Frazetta Cover just for the artwork.

I was the first kid on my block to have this one. I had no clue who they were or what they sounded like, purchased purely for the two cool cats versus two dweebs imagery, I figured it had to at least be interesting. This contained the studio version of "I Want You To Want Me," but it didn't hit until the Live at Budakon version came out, and then they got popular.

My friends and I were stunned at how good these guys were, I nearly wore the vinyl right out.

Yes. I have bought albums specifically for the cover artwork.

And I hung those on the wall as art and I have no intention of ever listening to what's on the vinyl as I don't have, nor do I plan to own a record player.
