Question Ever had a bass stolen from a hotel room?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am travelling next week and staying at a business class hotel in North New Jersey. I am debating whether to take my new Carvin or old SX with me. I would rather bring the Carvin with me, but am concerned about the possibility of it being stolen when I am gone from the room during the day. Thoughts?

If you bring the Carvin, make sure it's insured. And put it under the bed and lock the door. You could put a bike lock around something nailed to the floor and the hardcase handle too.

It's not insured yet I could bring my kryptonite lock, and lock the case too. That is a possibility.

My homeowner's insurance would cover it in that case.

Didn't some people do some study on kryptonite locks and figure out that they are all faulty and can be opened with a pencil or something?

Yeah Kryptonite locks can be opened with a Bic pen.

I'd say tying it to something unmovable would be a good option. Although I have no clue what it is you'd tie it to. In that case bring the SX, because I'd hate to risk leaving a new Carvin in a hotel room unattended.

Unless you need your "good" bass for a performance or audition while you're there, why take the chance? I'd play it safe and bring the Brice . .

I am just going to practice in the evenings while I am there. I wouldn't be to happy about the SX being stolen, either. I put about $300 in mods in it, so it is worth about $500, too Does homeowners insurance cover by default, or do you need a rider?

Does anyone else find the name Kryptonite super ironic now? (hint, kryptonite = BIC?)

what happens if u leave the carvin at home and someone breaks into your house??? if i was in your situation i would build an underground bombproof shelter made with 3 foot thick concrete walls reinforced with steel and the vault door from the mgm grand. then just mabey your basses would be safe.

but really just bring the carvin theres a pretty slim chance of someone stealing it from the hotel room or mabey the hotel has some way to lock it up for you theres an idea i am sure they have a safe in the hotel give that a shot anyway peace out.

That is the exact reason why I decided to get specialist inurance for my Stingray and my Eden head. I pay about AUS$200 a year, and they are covered wherever I go in the world from any damage or theft. I think it's the best money I've spent.

I know this is an old thread, but a cellist suggested to me that when you leave your instrument in your hotel room while going out, you put the "Do Not Disturb" sign on your room door. Just don't let anyone see you putting it there as you're leaving. The idea, of course, is that people will think you're still inside sleeping.

Wow, another zombie thread. So I have been locking the hard case and using a PC lock to tether the case handle to something fixed in the room. Although obviously not foolproof, it has always worked for me. It stops the casual interloper from either stealing or checking out and fooling around with my bass. They would have to break the handle to steal it, which would also make it difficult to carry. And lots more cameras have been added in hotel corridors and lobbies since this thread was started, so it would be just plain dumb to steal a bass and think no one would notice.

+1 and leave the TV on.

...Or you might try checking it in at the hotel office (Front desk) while you are out.

yeah.

i've left an entire bands equiptment- instruments, amps, entire PA system, drums, ext, in a hotel room before.

if you wanted to be safe, locking it to something is a pretty good idea. but i never thought twice about it- the only people with access to your room work there, and would be seen on camera taking anything.

I have used my pac safe mesh lock over my case when I was in a similar situation this Spring.

I also (sometimes) use it when I leave my bass at a (shady) venue before the show.
