Ever run into other bass players around town?

Sign in to disble this ad
I was waiting behind a guy at the ATM yesterday and when he turned around my eyes beheld Jaco Pastorius himself. I couldn't believe that he went to the same ATM as me, I was like ... I then woke up and the clock read 1:31am . I had a hard time falling asleep as all I could think of after that was the bassline to "The Chicken"..

But seriously, do you guys ever run into other bass players around town when your not dreaming? Maybe other guys at work that you didn't know played bass?

Back in the '80s, I used to hang with Oteil at the beach...somewhere there's video of him attempting to pants me.

One of the better ones-
Again, in the '80s, I'm in a record store down the street. Some guy is discussing Michael Brecker's debut solo album with the store help. From experience, I know the store help is pretty much worthless as far as knowing Jazz records, etc.
So I butt my way into the conversation...the store help leaves (seemed relieved). I get to talking with the guy & discover he plays bass, too. He asks me about my band, etc. I ask him-
"Who do you play with"?
He sez, "Branford Marsalis".

Dammit, it was Delbert Felix...knew the name from around town, had never actually seen him, though. Check out Crazy People Music by Marsalis for Delbert's bass playing.
(Some sites may list Robert Hurst as the bassist...not on my LP).

Same here. A couple of them from TB even! I plan on seeing a whole bunch of them this Saturday night at the benefit we're hosting.

Not exactly.

Last night I had rehearsal with my cover band-

Two of the members were telling me that I was playing a song incorrectly.

Of course, my band consisted of Ringo Starr and Gene Simmons- and they were telling me that I was playing the Rolling Stones' "Shattered" incorrectly. Now, exactly how do you tell Ringo Starr (from like 1964) and Gene Simmons (from now) that you know what you're doing because you're in a Rolling Stones cover band?

Exactly.

I still woke up perplexed.

Yeah, it's kind of funny running into another upright player on the train. You get two of us in a car and it's like there's a convention in town or something. But yer always running into cats on the street up here....

I hang out with quite a few of the other cats in my town. We've got our own little club. Everybody's really cool with each other. drummers and guitar players don't get along but bass players usually do.

There is this one around here, a jazz snob* who loves green day. He keeps telling me how much he says fender basses suck and how his silver tone is awesome.

*He plays upright and electric in the Orchestra and the Jazz band.

I was at a wedding that Embellisher was playing at...he's an old friend of their family apparently. This was before I was really active on TB, though...
