Ever see a band that can't cover their own material live?

I'm not referring to reworking a tune like Dave Grohl doing a stripped down version of "Stop when I say when," or near perfect performances like Pink Floyd. Since we started getting the Palladia channel I have seen many groups that suck doing their own stuff!

I guess if it's their material is not "covering." You know what I mean.

HA!! I've been worrying about this very thing! I may have written myself a bass part that will be hard to pull off 100% everytime. I think I'll end up paring it down.

Blue Oyster Cult couldn't play "The Red and the Black" live so they rewrote it as "I'm on the Lamb but I ain't no Sheep"

Lovin' it! I saw BOC open with Red / Black a few years back. Buck Dharma actually had to turn, face the drummer, and make a vigorous circular motion with his hand to get the tempo up to speed.

i saw nu-metal clowns Coal Chamber a long time ago, and even by the low standards of their recordings, they completely failed to pull it off live.

i think the main problem was the drummer, he couldn't hold time at all.

Are you sure about that? For one thing, "The Red and the Black" is on their second album and "I'm on the Lamb but I Ain't No Sheep" is on their first.

Tons of bands... Evanesence, Slipknot, Korn, Staind, Sevendust...

Most bands have trouble. Hell, the only band I have ever seen which is better live (meaning they never fake the parts, and it actually sounds better live than studio) was MUSE. This is one of the reasons I like them so much.

Not trying to be a fanboi, but really, they are incredible. I have seen them enough to be objective, and honestly, they are awesome live.

DMB is the same way. Every show is great.

I'm amazed that Meshuggah can play their stuff perfect live. If they can do it with music like they play, nobody should have any excuses. =P Coming from me, who will mess up at least once in every song. =P

The Grateful Dead were always much better live than their studio recordings sounded. But I certainly wouldn't say that most bands have trouble live; I have been to tons of concerts (mostly in the late 60's, 70's, and 80's, so admittedly it's dated info); in my experience the bands that sucked live compared to their studio work were in the minority.

The only bands I've seen live are in the category of better live than in studio. Every performance had just been so much better and so full of energy that it was hard to listen to the studio recording again for a while.

They are amazingly tight. I think Opeth are the same. They really have their s**t together.

I've seen all those bands live too, but the one I think you are way off about is Sevendust... I've seen them live eleven times, and they play an amazing show every time in my opinion.

I just don't think Corey can handle the constant screaming live, and I think that goes for Jonathan too... when I was at a Korn concert, in between every song, Jonathan had a respirator machine that he had to constantly use.

If anyone has seen Motley Crue on their Crue Fest tours, you'll know exactly what I mean when I say Vince Neal is the absolute worst live musician. He doesn't know half the lines to his own songs. Whenever they play "Shout at the Devil", he just does some high pitched screaming (which is actually worse than the studio version) for every verse, and half the time he'll just stop singing in the middle of a line.

I have to agree. Muse has been the best live band I've ever seen. Its pretty incredible to see all parts covered by limited personnel.
