It seems to me that maybe there just weren't many extended range fretless instruments around in those days. The first 5-string I ever played showed up at my local guitar store around 1988 or 1989 (bought it). The first 6-string in 1991 (bought it too). Jaco died in 1987. It may be entirely possible that he never even encountered a 5-string fretless let alone a 6 or 7-string. Jaco was never one to play by the rules. I'd bet that if Jaco had 5 minutes with this:
he'd be hooked.

For what it's worth Jaco had a 5 string fretless acoustic tuned E-A-D-G-C that he played a bunch.
