All you need to do is (1) buy music gear that resells at the same price so that you don't bleed cash when you flip and (2) when you calculate rent or mortgage and car payments, decide whether you want money for toys or not. I am positive that my car is cheaper than many here and (as important) uses a lot less fuel than many cars so well liked in America these days. |

Have a few instruments, but most everything was bought used, when I could get a good deal on it. Most expensive bass, Gibson Thunderbird SS that I picked up for $800 as a store demo they wanted to get rid of. Think I paid about same for the Gretsch, everything else was under $400, and a couple under $100. Got my Orange 50, and GK MB212 new for not much over cost, owing to having done business with the local music store for over 40 years, for myself and my boy. Just got a Hofner this week from a guy wanting to sell for $260, perfect condition w/case.

Therefore, you get an unrealistic representation of the amount of posters who have new, or a lot of, gear. |

Latley I have been using my G & L 91 ASAT, 91 Gibson Thunderbird and my MIJ Telecaster bass.
My primary rig, 2 GK 10001rbs , two 2 10 RBX cabs and 1 GK 1 15 RBX
Pedal Train, Line 6 Wireless Relay, Boss Over drive, EBS Multi Comp., MRX Chorus and a Korg Black ( whatever) chromatic tuner.
There are guys on TB that own one bass that probably cost more than all my gear collectively.
Am I loaded?
I spent Thanksgiving at the laundromat easting a turkey sandwich from Subway.

The pedal board took a lot of buying, selling, and trading to get where it is.
I'm not loaded. Right now I have about five grand. Working casual in the hospital and trying to file for EI again.

I have friends that spend 3 times what I have in all my gear every year fishing or playing golf.
I mean really, A new MIA Fender and a new amp is what a couple friends of mine spend every winter flying to Palm Springs or Southern Florida to play golf for a week.
If it is a hobby a grand a year is is not much. Many people spend more then that on beer.
If you are a pro it is your business. A tradesman will spend much more on tools and clothing. Someone that works in a office will spend that much on proper clothing.

I have a hard enough time convincing my partner that more than one bass is necessary (I only have one). I've managed to get her to allow for purchase of a reasonable fretless in the near future. But it'll be awhile before I ever get a small collection of four or five.
I wonder how all these guys with full home studios do it. I've been scrimping and saving for 10 years and I'm not even close.

Alcohol I developed a dislike after waking up to the smell of the previous night's rum oozing out of my pores. Even a shower can't get rid of that stench. Hope no one will grudge me a lousy $1,000 a month, I can't afford a wife and kids, yeah?
Better than being loaded with a ton of gear is to have stuff you really love, man. Every piece of gear I ever bought I connected to, doesn't matter if the world calls it a P.O.S. What you make of it is all that counts.
Sort of like the "tone suck" pedals that TGPers all complain about. I don't buy the argument that true bypass is the end all of a pedal. Rather, sucking of tone is something that can be fixed

My gear isn't that expensive, I just have a cheap vehicle... and no woman in my life. I have been married before and I can say for a fact that I wouldn't have any gear if I still was.
Besides that, I've never bought a new instrument that wasn't damaged and discounted. I have a five string cort I got from my music teacher that cost 40 hours of "back breaking, soul destroying, life extracting labor" (spelled labour on the contract) snicker.... it was used when I got it, but so was my ex wife...

I can buy a new amp or cab after a couple months of good gigs. A new bass after a solid 6 months of good gigs. The OP may be speaking on those that own Foderas, Brubakers, Roscoes, Ken Smiths, MTD and the like! |

The only reason I have my Bassman 300 Pro rig and my G&L is because I have been playing bass since 6th grade and never got into xbox and playstation... while all my friends were blowing their highschool-job-money on that stuff, expensive clothes, and so on, I was listening to my dad's records, wearing hand-me-downs, and saving and investing my money into music gear... 12 years later I have a few very groovy items.
But yes, I do believe some TBers are loaded as well.
EDIT: I also opted for a very crappy car at 16 so I could afford that purple MIA jazz bass I wanted so badly...

I am now 60 have played semi pro for 35+ years just had my 41 aniversery at my day job, earned 3 college degrees, we have 11 grandchildren with 12 due in June. I never spent any budget money on gear, never put my family in money trouble, but have worked my butt off playing, working OT to get the things I have. My best friend, wife and partner, has stood by me and helped me through it all. So the short answer to your question is I am neither drunk nor loaded, just a very lucky man whose family refers to me as the "Brett Favre" of the music world.
Love & Peace
PS
Yes I have 3 degrees, but still can't type very well LOL
Sorry for any spelling errors!
