I found an interesting video where two guys are playing the guitar parts to this death metal song on piano, and it sounds amazing, some of it sounds vaguely like classical music.
Here's the vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=We_cMznbs6Y
And the original song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gTCgYurcVs
The song's a bit long, but you only have to listen to the first 3 or so minutes (until the solo).
I found this quite interesting, I hope you guys do too.

Good comparison though.

I was just so amazed at how different it sounds with no vocals, drums and a different instrument, that I had to share.

Not my cup o' tea, but yeah I see where your coming from with the piano part, what a clever disguise!

| | The ever-so-useless | | | | | Lamb of God and Shadow's Fall are about the only two "heavy" screaming bands I can handle.. The whole growling thing.. I just feel like maybe I grew up too fast to enjoy it? It's not singing. Anyone can do it. Anyone. Don't believe me? Search it on youtube. ANYONE can do it. Can.Corpse I guess could be an exception as well. David Draimen, Chester Bennington, Chad Gray, Even Reznor or Vedder : They CAN sing.
plus effin 1 on the music being epic though. I totally agree. This board has really opened my eyes to the magic that is metal basslines outside of Mudvayne and Tool. (still my favorite tho)

Death metal would be music if the the vocals were taken out.

For me ... it's that darn guttural/primal screams/yells that keeps me far far away. IMO ... screaming isn't singing. Not for me ... nope, not at all.

This is what causes the endless critique of death metal as the harmonies (due to the distorted and detuned instruments) and melodies (due to use of chromaticism and exotic scales) are, often, somewhat unnatural and not immediately accessible ( often but not always). BUT, what most people don't realize is DM is based massively on rhythm. Listen to Cannibal Corpse's last album and you'll probably know what I mean, esp. on songs like Skewered From Ear To Eye, To Decompose and Evisceration Plague. The rhythms are so "groovy" (can't get a better word ) that you find yourself headbanging to them, at least I do
Maybe guys here will frown at this thought, but I think this affinity for rhythm, that DM fans share, is not unlike dance music. The rhythms and beats in the latter are so likeable, they make you want to dance. This is analogous to DM fans and headbanging.
Even in the vids linked to in the OP, you'll find that the rhythms are spot on: it's a major reason as to why the piano cover sounds so good. Additionally, the piano also brings the somewhat latent harmonic structures out into the foreground.

Blast beats are great and all, but the best part of DM is the groove that most of the songs break down to.

I think the only two DM bands I can understand the lyrics of are Death and Cannibal Corpse (CC only the last 3 albums, though, I like George so much more than Chris).
