Experimental music/unusual sounds

Sign in to disble this ad
For some reason, I'm interesting in starting/joining an experimental band. I was thinking of using analog effects to create some weird sounds. I was thinking of listening to a fair amount of electronic music (Fatboy Slim, Chemical Brothers, Aphex Twin, etc.) for inspiration, as well as some bands that create weird sounds using their instruments (like Radiohead and Audioslave) and other stuff.

So, I will choose my own instruments and amplifiers, and so will the other band members. Effects (preferably analog) can assist in creating unusual sounds. Can anyone here recommend any effects pedals that could be used in creating unusual sounds?

I think the Digitech Whammy pedal would help. Perhaps Lovetone if I can find them.

Also, reccommend any other techniques that could help in creating unusual sounds.

Watch these for ideas- You are thinking all wrong- You're thinking is not experimental.

What you need is a household appliance

This man knows something about experimental music-

I think you need to re-evaluate your idea of what does experimental mean?

As a bassist, you might better serve the band by holding down a solid bassline.

Hey dude,

Check out 'Type O Negative'. They are a metal band, but they come up with some really weird sounds.
Most of it is just with effect pedals layered over eachother, but it's really cool.
I'm not sure that you will hear much of it in their singles or popular songs, but there is a lot of weird stuff on their albums.

If you like them, pick up the 'October Rust' album, good stuff.

What you need isn't Fatboy Slim, it's Merzbow.

How is that experimental in any way?

That seems a bit too generalizing of a bassist. Not all bands have bassists that do that, nor is there a written fact that says you should have to.

I hope it's not. I've expressed my opinion on that term before.

I knew someone would say this. Notice that I wrote might, but if the bassist doesn't hold things together, you run the risk of seeming unfocused. There's a place for weird sounds, but when I play in a new style, I think about what I'm going to play before I start thinking about that. I would spend my time first on deciding what a bassline in this type of music should be.

Pick up a slide, or even just use a thick glass. Mix it with some delay or reverb, or some sort of swelling effect will sound really cool.

+100 on loopers: Boomerang Phrase Sampler is excellent for making lush noise-scapes (especially when the original sample is reversed and double-timed)

also recommend:

circuit bent toys/synths for the glitchfest
lots of delays/reverbs
feedback loops (check out Devi Ever's Spectacular series or the Effector13 Truly Beautiful Disaster)
contact mics!

Sorry, I'll be sure to do that next time.

But I got some pretty cool ideas of what to do with them.

What are you sorry for? I didn't really know what they were either so I searched it. I'm not mad. I thought that some of those ideas would be interesting to mess around with too.

I'm wondering how hard it would be make that weird wooden thing make consistent notes. Like build some sort of crazy bowed xylophone type of monstrosity that could be played more so than used for weird noise but still be capable of the weird noise, if that makes any sense.

it was me, I posted basically the same links as you at the same time and added that he should "rtfm" next time since it's kinda silly to ask "what is a ......?" on the internet, but I wasn't trying to be mean or I wouldn't have posted links. I deleted my post when I saw that you beat me to it by a few moments. I'm actually surprised he saw my post, it only existed for about 5 seconds. lol
