For some reason, I'm interesting in starting/joining an experimental band. I was thinking of using analog effects to create some weird sounds. I was thinking of listening to a fair amount of electronic music (Fatboy Slim, Chemical Brothers, Aphex Twin, etc.) for inspiration, as well as some bands that create weird sounds using their instruments (like Radiohead and Audioslave) and other stuff.
So, I will choose my own instruments and amplifiers, and so will the other band members. Effects (preferably analog) can assist in creating unusual sounds. Can anyone here recommend any effects pedals that could be used in creating unusual sounds?
I think the Digitech Whammy pedal would help. Perhaps Lovetone if I can find them.
Also, reccommend any other techniques that could help in creating unusual sounds.

Check out 'Type O Negative'. They are a metal band, but they come up with some really weird sounds.
Most of it is just with effect pedals layered over eachother, but it's really cool.
I'm not sure that you will hear much of it in their singles or popular songs, but there is a lot of weird stuff on their albums.
If you like them, pick up the 'October Rust' album, good stuff.

| How is that experimental in any way?
That's why I asked experimental how?
Avant Garde, Industrial, noise rock, jam rock ? |

Notice that I wrote might, but if the bassist doesn't hold things together, you run the risk of seeming unfocused. There's a place for weird sounds, but when I play in a new style, I think about what I'm going to play before I start thinking about that. I would spend my time first on deciding what a bassline in this type of music should be.

also recommend:
circuit bent toys/synths for the glitchfest
lots of delays/reverbs
feedback loops (check out Devi Ever's Spectacular series or the Effector13 Truly Beautiful Disaster)

But I got some pretty cool ideas of what to do with them. |

I'm wondering how hard it would be make that weird wooden thing make consistent notes. Like build some sort of crazy bowed xylophone type of monstrosity that could be played more so than used for weird noise but still be capable of the weird noise, if that makes any sense. |
